Concha Y Toro Terrunyo Carmenere Rapel Valley/Maipo Valley Carmenere 2003

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2005 harvest season for Almaviva was the longest and latest ever, lasting from April 14th to May 17th.  Meticulous ripeness controls and triple selection helped to obtain a very fine wine. Winter was warmer than average and marked nearly 30% less rainfall than an average year. The warm temperatures throughout the winter days, together with high temperatures in September, contribute to an early and homogenous budbreak on September 20 for the Cabernet Sauvignon, five days earlier than the average. Assemblage Cabernet Sauvignon: 74% Carmenère: 21% Cabernet Franc: 5% Barrel Aging 18 Months, new French oak. Tasting Notes Dark ruby red, intense and opaque. The nose is deep and complex, remarkably rich and concentrated, revealing fresh ripe fruits aromas, wild strawberries, black currant and blackberries nicely associated with mineral notes, spices, tobacco and coffee. The attack is powerful, ample and silky, immediately revealing a well-balanced and harmonious structure. The tannins are ripe and round, nicely enveloped by flavorful hints of vanilla, toasted orange zest, lavender, chocolate, and licorice. The finish is long, mineral and silky, enhancing the richness of the ripe fruit and the elegance of the tannins. A superb wine of an exceptional finesse and remarkable expression.

Dense purple to the rim, this wine exhibits the classic cassis aroma that is so characteristic of Mouton. Medium to full-bodied, tannic, powerful, and cut somewhat from the 1988 mold, this is a backward, chewy, well-endowed Mouton-Rothschild that will require considerable patience from those who purchase it. A blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot, the wine needs a good decade of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2015ndash;2030+.

Even in a so-called off vintage, Mouton proves why its a first growth and can command such a price. Loads of black raspberry and spice box on the nose just make your mouth water in anticipation of how good this wine will taste. Initially on the palate there is black cherry and hints of strawberry underneath that evolve into more licorice, tobacco, and smoke. It has a medium- to full-bodied structure with a finish of waves and waves of fruit that last and last. The wine needs a few hours to open up, 4ndash;5 in the bottle, or about 2 in a decanter, but I would not let it cellar for too much longer.

Good saturated ruby-red. Tight nose hints at currant and smoky oak. Highly concentrated, densely packed and built to age. As young as it is, it also shows a lovely velvety texture rare for this vintage. Finishes with terrific breadth, subtle minerality and noble tannins. Irsquo;ve been a fan of this wine since the outset.

The 2001 Mouton Rothschild, a blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc from low yields of 28 hectoliters per hectare, was quite closed and nearly impenetrable when I tasted it in 2003. It exhibits a dense ruby/purple color and a hint of new saddle leather intermixed with espresso, black currant liqueur, and Asian spices. The wine is dense on the attack, but excruciatingly tannic and backward, with medium to full body and a certain austerity/angularity in the finish. As I indicated last year, this wine needs to flesh out for it to merit a higher score. Anticipated maturity: 2015ndash;2035.

A behemoth, the gigantic 2000 Mouton-Rothschild (76% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14% Merlot) boasts a saturated purple color as well as aromas of ink, cassis, licorice, damp earth, and sweet oak. It reveals a cassis liqueur-like flavor profile with a hint of truffles. This majestic effort will undoubtedly close down, but enjoy an exceptionally long life. Anticipated maturity: 2012ndash;2050+.

The 2000 Mouton Rothschild is at its best with about 24ndash;48 hours of decanting. A blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14% Merlot, the wine offers a saturated ruby/purple color in addition to reticent but promising aromas of toast, coffee, licorice, creme de cassis, and roasted nuts. Dense, chewy, and backward, with tremendous purity and density in addition to obvious toasty oak, it is full-bodied, powerful, tannic, and backward. Twenty-four to 48 hours of aeration only hints at its ultimate potential. This blockbuster will be exceptionally long-lived. It is not as expressive as the other first-growth Medocs, but give it time. As I predicted in my first report on the millennium vintage (April, 2001), Philippine de Rothschild could be expected to do something special with her presentation of 2000. She has exceeded everyonersquo;s expectations with a work of art. Those who have seen the extraordinary packaging of the 2000 Mouton Rothschild must certainly realize this is a brilliant achievement. The bottle is extraordinary, and likely to have nearly as much value empty as full! Her genius is obvious, but itrsquo;s whatrsquo;s inside that counts! Anticipated maturity: 2015ndash;2050+.

Considering the vintages and the estate, Moutonrsquo;s performances in 1989 and 1990 are puzzling. I have tasted these wines multiple times since my last reviews appeared in print. The 1989 Mouton-Rothschild is the superior wine, but in no sense is this a compelling wine if compared to the Moutons produced in 1995, 1986, and 1982. The 1989 displays a dark ruby color that is already beginning to reveal significant lightening at the edge. The bouquet is surprisingly evolved, offering up scents of cedar, sweet black fruits, lead pencil, and toasty oak. This elegant, medium-bodied restrained wine is beautifully made, stylish, and not dissimilar to the 1985. It is an excellent to outstanding Mouton that should be close to full maturity in 4ndash;5 years; it will drink well for 15ndash;20.
