What to Expect
Carmenère is one of a small group of wines that thrives in its adopted land but struggles to gain acceptance at home. It still is used on occasion in France's Bordeaux region where it adds color and complexity to blends with its distinctive mélange of smoky, herbal and gamy tones. In South America, particularly Chile, it ripens fully and the wines take on added layers of dark berry fruit that gives it a balance rarely achieved in France.
Winemakers Notes
Tended by the winemaker's attentive hand, each varietal grows and ripens within its own particular Terruño (the Spanish word for the French concept of terroir), an exceptional piece of land in the heart of the very best vineyards of Concha y Toro. Each Terrunyo varietal originates from a unique, specific vineyard in which the microclimate, the chosen grape stock, a select piece of soil and the expert hand of man interact magically in a metaphysical conjunction, which creates perfect harmony and delivers unrivaled quality.

This Carmenere originates in Lot 21 of Concha y Toro's Peumo vineyards, an area noted for highly permeable, poor soil. A 12-year-old vineyard was selected, the oldest in the area. Yield per hectare was 35hl. About 75% of stemmed grapes were cold-macerated at 10ºC for 48 hours, then fermented in stainless steel tanks at temperature ranging from 27ºC to 30ºC.
