Food Pairings for Concha Y Toro Merlot Xplorador
I believe that, drinking lower-end wines helps keep the palate honest. When 90 Plus Wines reported a 90 point Parker scoring for this second-from-the-bottom tier Casillero del Diablo offering from the capable people at Concha Y Toro, my parsimonious (but suspicious) side took note. The wine does indeed have good depth of color and a nice plum-like nose with a touch of cake spice. However, the entry is not entirely pleasant at first with a certain acerbic and rubbery note that puts all out of balance. An hour later, and the wine settles down to a nicely balanced rich and plummy wine hitting above its weight class. Not 90 points, but excellent value nonetheless.

Bright, soft berry and grapey fruit, with a fresh vanilla- and chocolate-tinged finish. From Chile. Drink now.
Dark and deep red. Mature red fruit character married with coffee and vanilla. Hints of plum and spice, generously framed by toasty American oak. Round and well-balanced.
Slightly minty green-herb notes and toasty oak offset the creamy, ripe fruit bouquet of this soft, accessible red. The mouth shows black cherry flavors, oregano and cocoa accents, while mild tannins and a full fruitiness mark the close.
Here's another terrific value from the Casillero line. This meaty merlot fills the mouth with its black cherry and tea leaf scents over a soft and dense texture of tannins. The freshness of its fruit makes it approachable now with fettuccine Alfredo.
A plush, well-sculpted Merlot from a reputable and value-conscious Chilean winery, this features fairly intense flavors of red plum and currant and well-integrated dark spice notes that linger on the finish. Drink now through 2002.
Very deep and saturated blackish purple color. Medium-bodied. Balanced acidity. Moderately extracted. Mildly tannic. Black fruits, minerals. Relatively straightforward with a lush and velvety mouthfeel. Subtly flavored with fruit overtones weaving in and out of a clipped finish.
Deep red in color with vigorous shades of purple that lead to aromas of ripe red plum fruit, mixed with alluring notes of coffee and vanilla spice. On the palate this Malbec is full-bodied with velvety cherry and strawberry flavors framed by fleshy tannins and a smooth finish.
