Concha Y Toro Merlot Rapel Valley Casillero del Diablo 2016

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

This is decidedly herbal and smoky on the nose, with a lot of dried herb and grassy aromas accenting the cocoa- and leather-scented black currant and black berry fruit. This is surprisingly soft on entry with a smooth, glossy mouth feel supporting lovely spiced plum and blackberry fruit flavors. The tannins are ripe and polished, with a creamy edge. The flavors are fresh and pure with some acidity coming up on the back end, refreshing the palate for the moderately long, toasty oak-accented blackberry finish. A touch more acidity would be welcome here but this is quite attractive. 87pts

Low on the nose and slightly dusty with a little vegetal funk adding complexity to the core of red currant fruit. Soft and juicy in the mouth, this is very lightly tannic and offers appealing black raspberry and plummy fruit framed with gentle wood tones and perked up with juicy acids. A bit simple, but fairly rich and well balanced, and certainly easy to drink. Some toasty spice on the short finish. 84pts

Para mis amigos chilenos y americanos, este es el mejor merlot que he probado y es exquisito con frambuesa fresca y polvo de cacao y hierba tostada and all kinds of berries with a little spice too.

A little rubbing alcohol- like on the nose, with some new, rubbery tennis balls (is this a defect?). very soft wine in taste, not my favorite.

Hard spice, juniper and minty aromas meld with chocolate and blackberry scents. This is chewy and full on the palate, with spicy, minty blackberry and black currant flavors that finish thick, with a woodsy, lightly green aftertaste.

Long on fruit and fine on the palate, the Concha y Toro Casillero del Diablo Merlot delivers more than the usual state of Merlot affairs; enjoy with a brisket of beef.

Wild berry aromas come with a cool hint of herbal mint. This is full, grabby and solid in the mouth. Flavors of dark fruits come across lightly stewed and pruny, while the finish dishes up a final taste of prune and foresty notes.
