Legend has it that in the early 1890s, winery founder Don Melchor went to his cellar to discover several of his best wines had gone missing. Hoping to ward off more thieves, he spread the rumor that this must have happened because a devil lived in his cellar, hence the name, which translates to “the devil’s cellar.” The first wines branded Casillero del Diablo were produced by Concha y Toro in 1953 and became an international success by the 1960s. The devil icon became a part of the packaging starting in the 1990s. The portfolio is now under the direction of winemaker Marcelo Papa. The wines are available in many styles and varietals of dry reds and whites, plus rosés and sparkling wines. Many of these considered terrific values for their pricepoints.  Read less
Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

The 2009 has subdued citrus fruit but is still fairly rich and sappy.Nice acid balance and good color. My rating -- 86.

Forward, with piecrust, pear, fig and butter notes backed by a hint of hazelnut on the soft finish. Drink now.

Light and fresh, with flint and apple flavors followed by modest toast on the finish. Drink now.

Nice and clean, with ample stone fruit and apple aromas. No, not a lot of nuance on display. But plenty of ripe, pure apple and melon flavors followed by some length on the mildly creamy finish. Solid, with mass-market appeal.

One of the best under-$10 Chardonnays anywhere is Casillero del Diablo, made by Marcello Papa of Concha y Toro. The wine overdelivers on the nose, where custard, lemon blossom and buttered popcorn work in tandem to set up eye-opening apple, melon and light mineral flavors. Not heavy but still full and toasty. A rewarding and generous wine; get it while you can.

Medium yellow color. High-pitched orchard fruit aromas of pear, quince and Granny Smith apple. Round and juicy, with a pure pear flavor that takes an exotic turn toward peach with air. Round, silky and juicy, finishing with vibrant notes of pear skin and lemon thyme.

The 2007 Chardonnay reveals pear, apple, and pineapple in its fragrant perfume leading to an intense, ripe, and lengthy Chardonnay.

Mass Chardonnay from Chile doesnrsquo;t come much better or more consistent than this. Itrsquo;s toasty on the nose, with candied, lightly creamy banana and citrus flavors. Very nice as a fresh young wine, with a touch of heat on the finish. Great for picnics and backyard summer parties.
