What to Expect

Carmenère is one of a small group of wines that thrives in its adopted land but struggles to gain acceptance at home. It still is used on occasion in France's Bordeaux region where it adds color and complexity to blends with its distinctive mélange of smoky, herbal and gamy tones. In South America, particularly Chile, it ripens fully and the wines take on added layers of dark berry fruit that gives it a balance rarely achieved in France.

Winemakers Notes

Reviews

A native French variety, this grape extinguished almost completely after the great phylloxera plague. It resurfaced in Chile at the end of the XX century, where it breeds wines of intense color, soft and round tannins, and restrained acidity. Characteristic aromas of chocolate, coffee and, in a subtler way, moist soil.

Great Value, won't astound but won't disappoint either. Smooth is the name of the game here...hints of chocolate, plum, and almond.

I give it a 5 considering the price. $10 in other words compared to others in the price range.... I have been drinking what few Carmenere's I have been able to find in the Northern Virginia DC area for about a year now. Love the unusual texture, smell and taste of this grape in general and this wine is no exception. No one has mentioned the slight, but pleasing hint of tobacco that is present in different amounts in all of the ones I have tried so far.

Solid, with strong hints of berries (rasp- and blackberry). Well-rounded. Very good price/value IMHO.

Dark red crimson color. Notes of plums, black fruit, chocolate and spice on the nose. It is a well-balanced, round wine with firm tannins.
