Concha Y Toro Casillero del Diablo Cabernet Sauvignon Central Valley 2008
Color: Red and intense red ruby. Aroma: Gorgeous and lovely bright cherry, blackcurrant and dark plum with toasted oak. Taste: Medium bodied with silky tannins and long, ripe fruit and berry aftertaste, with impressive balance of fruit and polished tannins. Food Pairing: Red meats, spicy dishes and ripe cheeses such as Gruyere.
Bang-on cheapie. Flavorful, smooth, enjoyable, great mouth feel and guests really don't know... ;)
The first whiff I got was the cassis or black currant. The cassis scent is predominant but after some work other aromatic notes are detectable. There is a hint of blackberry and a woody, smoky vanilla lingers from the eight-months this young wine spent in American Oak barrels. The flavor is a cassis-fest as well. The tartness of the cassis is overpowering. Yet subtle notes of dark roasted coffee and cherry come through and dance lightly on the taste-buds. After further tasting something takes me back to the waking hours of a backpacking trip through North Carolina - possibly the not-quite ripe blackberries I had for breakfast and the lingering odor of the still-smoldering camp fire. The finish is short - lingering for three seconds or so and disappearing with a breath of alcohol. This wine has an astringent quality owed to the tannins, making it a little more bitter and dry than I prefer. Overall I am not wowed by this Chilean Cab. Spicy peppers with an initial stench of sour fruit on the nose. Sour, black cherry on the swirl. Poorly balanced, almost brutish in its tannic structure with a short, barely perceptible finish. Cheap, massed produced wine. Avoid. There are infinitely superior wines in this price range (i.e. The Sabor Real Toro 2006 and La Mano Mencia Roble 2007 spring to mind.) 78.
It got higher recommendation than the Merlot from the same winery. However, I still prefer the Merlot over this exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon.
not to my liking, alcohol was overwhelming...felt it going down, not a bad thing....but just not much taste except the alcohol maybe I should have let it age....will finish the bottle with cigars....and see how it pairs with the gars.

This wine starts off with a good amount of wood, but then rounds out into a nicely ripe, well-balanced, fruity finish that is uncommon in any Cabernet Sauvignon at this price.
