Concannon Vineyard Petite Sirah Central Coast Limited Release 2008

External Review by Premium Wine & Spirits:

Although somewhat monolithic, the 2005 Petite Sirah Limited Release (75,000 cases produced) is solidly constructed, offering up scents of black fruits, earth, and minerals. It should last for 5ndash;6 years or longer. These are very good values from Concannon.

They could speak, the rocks of Concannon Vineyard would tell a tale rich in history. Concannon’s treasured contributions to winemaking have positioned it as landmark winery with an enduring commitment to creating outstanding, award-winning wines. We have a history of proud firsts. We were one of the first wineries to pioneer Bordeaux and Rhone-styled wines in California. We are the home of America's first successful Irish vintner, the world's first Petite Sirah and world-class wines from our fruitful, rocky soil. As a founding family of California wines, Concannon created the hardworking Cabernet Sauvignon Clones 7 and 8, which helped plant much of Napa in the 1970s. Pioneering founder, James Concannon, began making wine in the Livermore Valley in 1883. Now, his passion for family and fine wine is evident in every aspect of Concannon Vineyard and we’re fortunate to share it with you today. Read less

Herersquo;s a rich, balanced Petite Sirah with a lot going for it. Full-bodied and dry, itrsquo;s enormously deep in red and black currant, dark chocolate and anise flavors, with considerable tannins. Easy to find, with 55,000 cases produced, and a great example of why Petite Sirah is such a hot variety.

The Livermore Valley master of Petite Sirah outspaces much of its competition and is priced fairly. Well-made and very balanced for a larger production endeavor, this Petite opens with a nose of pepper and mocha, stewed berry and plum and develops into a full body thatrsquo;s lush and oaky but also shows plenty of minerality.

The wineryrsquo;s signature bottling remains a staple for PS lovers. Dark berry flavors pick up hints of spice and herb on the tannic finish. Itrsquo;s reasonably full-bodied, but it does have a slightly tart, constricted feel to the finish. Drink now or hold 3ndash;5 years.

Classic example of this incredibly full-bodied dark wine. A Petite Sirah this thick and rich is anything but ldquo;petite.rdquo; Mouthcoating and teeth staining, this monster red is packed with blackberry, blueberry, mocha and spice. Great for grilled steak or rack of lamb.

Ripe and broad-shouldered, a potent wine with excellent depth to the extracted blueberry, raisin and white pepper flavors. Almost viscous fruit texture folds into chewy, solid tannins on the finish. Drink now through 2009.
