Comm. G B Burlotto Dolcetto d'Alba 2016

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Spends a few months in botte Plum skins, shoe black, and a floral extract come together on the nose. Onentry this offers a huge punch of elegant, fresh pure and simple fruit that makes this seem to be a bit on the fruity side with supple small ripe tannins, black plum fruit and a little edge of black raspberry. Turning more delicate and fine on the backend that comes on with a pop of fruit and a very subtle bitter edge, hinting at that bitter almond note in the finale. 88pts

Our wines are created in an ancient structure, which surrounds an interior garden. Fermentation takes place in a wide area with huge windows, in barrels of French Oak which of 50 to 70 hectoliters and the temperature of the musts can be controlled. In the adjacent area, steels containers are used for the lactic fermentation and for the last phase of aging wines. The aging is done in two brick vaulted cellars: one is only partly underground which has thermal variations particularly adapted for stabilizing the wines, housing the wines to be consumed when young (Pelaverga, Dolcetto and Barbera.), the other cellar is totally underground and has 80% humidity with a constant temperature, used for the delicate phase of aging in wooden caskets for the most important wines like our Barolo. After bottling, the wines complete the aging process and the bottles are piled for settling, before labeling and packaging. Read less

This is a bit reticent on the nose with a dusty mineral character and gentle herbal suggestions floating above the taut blackberry fruit. In the mouth this has laser focus for Dolcetto, with the acidity corralling the fruit and driving the black, lightly spicy fruit into a long finish that shows a gentle herbal top note on the finale. 90pts

1 week maceration in tini, temperature controlled to retain freshness and aromatics, Malolactic fermentation in Stainless followed by ageing, half in stainless and half in botte for several months depending on the vintage. Lovely floral tones soar from the glass, big violets then some dark coal, mineral notes, black earth, black cherry builds into lovely rich deep, dark fruits with background notes of sweet, tropical flowers but they never obscure the depth of fruit. At first this appears lean and elegant in the mouth but quickly adds impressive density with strong structural elements that make this both chewy and bright. This retain great freshness to the palate that offers up great inner mouth perfume of cocoa, sweet spices, floral and red berry notes but is a bit blocky at this point. It finishes with impressive follow through and good purity so it looks like it may need some time to relax a bit in the mouth. 89pts

As I sat and sniffed around the edges of this glass, it reminded me of everything I love about Italian wine. The first impression was of blackberry jam and brioche, but with time in the glass, the slightest hint of barnyard and earth added dimensions that I had at first not noticed. It was easy on the palate, with perfect balance and flavors of wild berries and a bit of old wood. Some gravelly tannin was noticeable on the finish but it served to remind me that this wasn't just a forgettable wine from who-knows-where, this was Dolcetto from Piedmont and a truly excellent example at that.

Nice textbook dolcetto with blackberry, sour berries and fresh toast. The palate is fresh and vibrant with balanced acidity showing lush blackberry jam and an herbal flavor that led to a fresh dark fruit finish.

This is a great Dolcetto of the dusty, mineral-laden, old school variety. Floral notes are complimented by dark, grapey fruit and a back-bone that is fairly tannic for Dolcetto. The finish offers limestone and chalk mineral character.

Dolcetto, in spite of its misleading name, is always a dry, red wine. This is from the Piedmont region of northern Italy. Enjoy this wine as a match to everyday Italian foods - pizza, cured meats, olives and cheese. This Dolcetto is well-structured, unoaked and, as always, dark-fruit-driven.
