Columella Swartland 2006

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Low and clean on the nose with bright notes of red currant, black cherry and vanilla backed up with integrated notes of wood spice. This is a touch thick on entry and seemingly soft but the wine quickly unfurls in the mouth showing off nicely supportive acidity and super fine polished tannins. This is elegant and fresh with some lovely raspberry and briar flourishes on a palate, which is lithe and transparent. This shows more Rioja character than the 2006 Roda 1 and I prefer it for current consumption. There’s a touch of chocolate character that pops on the back end then a nice rush of cinnamon toned red fruit follows. There is a touch of mintiness to this wine and a suggestion of austerity that is held in check by the lovely fruit here. 91pts

Beautiful black fruit and spice on the nose -- bit of heat still after 5 years. Austere fruit, strong tannins and a bite of licorice. Nice load of spice and oak. Cocoa finish.

Smoked porkbelly in the nose, sort of an inky feeling in the aroma, maybe tobacco and licorice. Big blackberry fruits on the body. Nice acidity with some noticeable graininess on the finish.

More fresh tasting and fruit-forward than newer vintages, considering its age. Decent tannic and earth structure. Definitely a wine that would benefit from some cellaring, and then magic!
