Columbia Winery Riesling Cellarmaster's 2011

Member Review by Zuiko:

Excellent nose of peach, nectarine and slight tangerine. Lacks power of some of the older vintages. Needs more acid. My rating -- 85

Columbia Winery was founded in 1962 during the birth of the Washington wine industry by a group of 10 people from Seattle, 6 of whom were University of Washington professors. Under the name "Associated Vintners", their goal was to bring european-style wine to Washington State. They began production in the basement of a Laurelhurst home and grew to one of the largest producers in the state. The winery has the distinction of being the first premium winery in the state as well as having the frist Master of Wine on the continent as their winemaker--David Lake. David Lake was instrumental in bringing several varietals, including Syrah, Viognier, Cabernet Franc, and Pinot Gris, into the state through a partnership with Mike Sauer, the owner of the Red Willow vineyard. Columbia Winery was the first in the state to commercially produce a Syrah, which has become one of Washington's most acclaimed varietals. Currently, Columbia Winery produces anything from a stylish Malbec, to their most popular Cellarmaster's Riesling, to beautifully crafted Syrahs and Cabernets, to a beautiful Bordeaux style blend named The Peninsula. The 2003 Otis Cabernet was awarded a spot among the top 100 wines in Washington according to the Seattle Times and the 2007 Small Lot Riesling, a lovely, crisp off-dry riesling was named the Northwest wine of the Week. They are open for tasting 7 days a week from 10-6. Tastings cost $5; a small price to pay for 5 tastes from a menu of 8 wonderful wines. The tasting room staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and prides themselves on educating visitors on Columbia Winery as well as Washington wine. Read less

The 2010 cellarmaster's is a bit lighter than their 2009. It has nectarine-like fruit but the finish is a bit short. Needs a bit more acid to balance it.

Distinctly different from other WA state Rieslings. Rich with a great perfumy nose. Outstanding fruit but age is starting to reduce it now.

Served slightly chilled. This wine had delicious fruit flavors of pear and melon. Light-bodied and crisp with a balanced acidity that lends great definition to the fruit flavors in this wine. This is a very good riesling made in a style that is reminiscent to me of German rieslings. Some American rieslings are much too sweet for my taste but that was not the case at all with this wine. Great quality to price ratio. Recommended.

What a value! Normally found here in the Seattle, WA area for less than $10 per bottle. Apricot notes and a clean light finish characterized this wine.

A little to sweet for me, but very good in comparison to other Rieslings from the area

Off dry with a smokey apricot nose. A nice spritz of acidity keeps it balanced and there are flavors of lemon grass that leads to a rich, toasty, golden finish - lots of crystallized honey on the finish. Very nice for such a cheap wine. A little sweet on the finish for me, but in the mouth the acidity kept it from being flabby. Paired with Kung Pao Chicken - very nice too.

Juicy white fruit notes. Semi-sweet and lush, with bright peach and white flower aromatics. Great with cupcakes or spicy Thai dishes.

An unapologetically sweet Riesling that will become one of your favorites over the next few months for parties and cookouts. Aromatic, with floral, honey and apricot notes; try this with grilled pork chops and hot, spicy mustard.

A delightful example of sweet Washington Riesling. Rich with pear apricot and honey flavors. This little wine is sweet enough to have with dessert or serve it chilled on a hot summer evening.

Light straw in color, this Riesling offers floral aromas of honeysuckle and peach blossom. Flavors of peaches, tropical fruit and freshly squeezed lime juice with zippy natural acidity and a slight spritz from retained carbon dioxide make the aromas jump out of the glass. - WineryWinemaker: Kerry NortonAlcohol: 10%Total Acidity: 10.5/LpH: 2.9Residual Sugar: 60 g/L ** SOLD OUT **

Perfectly captures the bright apple/pear fruit, succulent sweetness and fresh acids of Columbia Valley Riesling. Always a fine value, but in this spectacular vintage it ramps it up am extra notch or two of flavor.

Fruit salad and a touch of honey on the nose. Fresh, moderately sweet and juicy, with lively, fairly intense fruit salad flavors. Simple but attractive, and a bit less sweet on the aftertaste.
