Columbia Crest Winery Shiraz Grand Estates Columbia Valley 2015

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Nice dark fruits on the nose have a roasted edge and are framed with vanilla, roast coffee and spicy oak notes. On entry this is full and darkly fruited but the sweetness of the fruit quickly fades leaving the mid-palate exposed to an onslaught of spicy oak and wood tannins. the finish has decent length and nice freshness but not enough to redeem this. 82pts

This dark colored wine has a good amount of body, is moderately dry, tannic, and has plenty of mellow oak. Alcohol nicely integrated. Some dark fruit flavors but muted. A good bang for the buck though.

Great spice concentration and balance of fruit with the blending work, though the oak exposure could have been a few degrees softer.

Very enjoyable shiraz. Warm and fruity up front, with a very soft and smooth finish.

I was mixed about this. The finish seemed to have a fair amount of spicy complexity for the price, but the first impression was shallow and too tart for me. The more I drank, the less I liked it, interestingly.

I couldn't help but feel that I was drinking grape juice with alcohol, rather than an actual, crafted wine. The flavors were nice and fruity, but it lacked focus and substance.

The Wine Enthusiast Magazine #1 Best Buy of 2017 Some of the most exciting wines coming out of Washington state these days are the Syrahs. The micro-climate seems to be ideal to bring out the best expression and nuance in this warm climate, bold red varietal. What's so exciting about this wine is that it brings all of the robust, smoky character and style at a price that seems too good to be true. The grapes are sourced primarily from the prime Wahluke Slope district, where low yields bring concentrated flavors. The wine aged for 14 months in 60% French and 40% American oak barrels. Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored this 91 points and selected it as their #1 Best Buy of the year! They said "The aromas in this wine pop, with notes of dried herb, plum, vanilla and smoked meat. It brings a compelling sense of texture, coating the palate from end to end with exquisitely balanced fruit and savory flavors. It's a knockout at this price."

The finish lingers pleasantly. Drink now."

This opaque - almost purple -wine bursts out of the glass with intense aromas of spice, blueberry, lavender and violet. Great concentration in the mid-palate carries the fruit flavors towards the long silky finish.
