My Rating : 89. Nice package with hint of oak and berries on the nose. well balanced with a hint of sugar residue. Where the vintner got the description dusty cocoa from is beyond me mayby he needs to calibrate his taste bus by taking a spoonfull of cocoa.

I personally have a hard time finding a merlot I enjoy, but this fit the bill. Oaky on the nose, but the palate was loaded with red cherry & blueberry (almost Gusher-like to use a Garyveeism) and chocolate; the oak did not come through there nearly as much. Soft but good tannins with a lengthy finish.

TASTING NOTES: This medium-bodied Merlot delivers aromas of spice and blackberry with the perfect balance of earth, cocoa and ripe cherry notes on the palate. The complex flavors are followed by a smooth, velvety finish. - Juan Muñoz Oca, Winemaker GROWING SEASON: * The 2015 vintage was one of the warmest growing seasons on record in Washington. * Warm temperatures continued through the spring and summer, moderating slightly into fall and extending an early harvest. * Overall, 2015 saw very favorable growing conditions, producing optimal ripening across varieties and yielding outstanding wines throughout the region. VINEYARDS: * The Horse Heaven Hills vineyards are located in Eastern Washington. This region is mostly dry with less precipitation due to the rain shadow effect from the surrounding Cascade Mountain range. * The terrain consists of south-facing slopes that provide excellent sun exposure for grape ripening, and protection from cold airflow during the winter months. * Strong wind patterns in the Horse Heaven Hills reduce canopy size and density and contribute to even ripening by moderating temperature extremes. Blend: 82% Merlot 12% Syrah 4% Malbec 2% Other Varietals Alcohol: 15.0% TA: 0.53g/100ml pH: 3.76

TASTING NOTES: This medium-bodied merlot delivers aromas of spice and blackberry with the perfect balance of earth, cocoa and ripe cherry notes on the palate. The complex flavors are followed by a smooth, velvety finish. - Juan Muñoz Oca, Winemaker GROWING SEASON: After a “classic” Washington vintage in 2012, the summer of 2013 was one of the warmest in the past decade with favorable temperature conditions extending into fall. Accelerated ripening due to the warm season was slowed by cooler temperatures and light rain events in September. This aided in hang time development resulting in stellar fruit characters and flavors. VINEYARDS: The Horse Heaven Hills vineyards are located in Eastern Washington. This region is mostly dry with less precipitation due to the rain shadow effect from the surrounding Cascade Mountain range. The terrain consists of south-facing slopes that provide excellent sun exposure for grape ripening, and protection from cold airflow during the winter months. Strong wind patterns in the Horse Heaven Hills reduce canopy size and density and contribute to even ripening by moderating temperature extremes. VINIFICATION: Grapes were crushed and then fermented 7-14 days on the skins to extract optimum fruit and structural components. Malolactic fermentation occurred in stainless steel tanks and oak barrels.. The wine was barrel aged in 1/3 new American and French oak and in 2/3 older oak for approximately 18 months. Alcohol: 14.5% Total Acidity: 0.51g/100ml pH: 3.76

Fresh and expressive, this open-textured red glows with dark berry and subtle spice notes, lingering on the finish. Drink now through 2017.

Unmistakably Washington Merlot with its notes of milk chocolate, raspberry, espresso and cherry. It’s light in style but still sumptuous in feel with slightly rustic tannins framing a lingering chocolate and vanilla-filled finish.

The H3 Merlot opens with aromas of raspberries, black pepper and earthy tones which lead to flavors of chocolate covered cherries and plum preserves on the silky smooth palate. The flavors and aromas culminate in an intense - yet elegant - finish. - Juan Muñoz Oca, WinemakerAlcohol: 14.5%Total Acidity: 0.54g/100mlpH: 3.74
