Columbia Crest Syrah Columbia Valley Reserve 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

Coyote Canyon Vineyard is the source of some of the finest grapes in the state. The varieties used in this blend benefit from the varied topography of the vineyard giving each variety different exposure. The vineyard is located in the Horse Heaven Hills AVA, east of the Cascade Mountain range. Up to 14,000 feet high, the mountains effectively block eastward-moving wet weather systems from the Pacific Ocean. The terrain consists of south-facing slopes that provide excellent sun exposure for grape ripening, and good air drainage which protects the vineyards during the winter months. Well-drained, sandy soils have low fertility and low water-holding capacity, allowing precise control of vine growth patterns. Strong wind patterns, which are unique to the Horse Heaven Hills, reduce canopy size and density, create better sun exposure, and contribute to even ripening by moderating temperature extremes.

Lovely on the nose: wiry, gamy and very little brett, but what is there is leather and fresh barnyard. Very fresh, not sure I would call this domestic. Green peppercorn, smokey, intense and really impressive. The cigar and minty spice are powerful. Big and a touch sweet with bright acids, lots of red plum and lots of red fruit. Backed up with a nice herbal, pollen note. Finishes with bright acids, a bit too bright, and a lot of sweet tea. Much more on the nose, which is outstanding, palate is red currant and a touch lean. 89pts

Now for the wine, a beautiful ruby color in the glass, just as you would expect from a nice Syrah. The nose is an interesting combination of ripe blackberry, tart cherry, smoke and some herb notes, perhaps it's a bit of tarragon that I'm picking up, The taste is classic Walla Walla Syrah, with flavors of tart cherry, blackberry, leather and anise up front, which then transitions to some notes of dark chocolate, green grass and earthy basalt notes midpalate. The finish is quite nice, with some well structured tannins that support a long, dry finish. This wine is probably right about at its prime drinking right now, so I'm glad I opened this one! Very perfumy on the nose. Vibrant burgundy colored, lots of fruit on the palate with very minimal tanning, very leathery on the tongue.

Notes: Grapes were destemmed and crushed with 30% whole berries remaining. Primary fermentation on the skins lasted between 7-14 days depending on the lot/variety. Lots were placed in 30% new French and 30% new American oak barrels for malolactic fermentation. The wine was racked by gravity flow at three month intervals during its 18 months in barrels. Final cuvee was blended 3 months before bottling.
