Colpetrone Montefalco Rosso 2014

Member Review by vin0vin0:

Really interesting sagrantino di montefalco from Colpetrone. There's a burst of black licorice coming out of the glass. Loads of ripe dark fruit on the tongue along with earth tones, tar, black licorice, a touch of mint, extremely grippy and drying tannins and medium acidity. This is a fairly big red that needs a good bit more bottle time to resolve the tannins but hopefully not lose the fruit.

The 2008 Sagrantino di Montefalco is gorgeous in this vintage. Mocha, espresso, grilled herbs, tobacco and plums are woven together in this full-bodied voluptuous wine. All the elements are very much in the right place. Although not especially varietal, the 2008 boasts considerable depth, richness and power, all in a fairly sexy style for this wine. Plums, mocha, tobacco and incense all add complexity on the finish. The 2008 is decidedly overt and flashy. It is also one of the very best values in Sagrantino.

Bright cherry fruit and cassis open the bouquet of this hearty Sagrantino. At the back are savory tones of cured meat, leather and tobacco followed by firm tannins.

The 2008 Montefalco Sagrantino delivers a tight and focused quality of fruit with pressed cherry, plum, earthy tones and dry clay. A rose-like floral note adds a feminine touch. Anticipated maturity: 2014–2020.

Weingut: ColpetroneRegion:    UmbrienRebsorte: SagrantinoInhalt: 0,75 LiterAlkoholgehalt: 14,5 Vol.%Säuregehalt: 5,5 g/LiterRestsüße: 1,5 g/LiterLagerfähigkeit: 10 - 15 Jahre ab JahrgangFassreife: in Barriques gereift (18 Monate)Empfohlene Serviertemperatur: 16-18°C Suche nach Rebsorten > Rote Rebsorten

Wine Tasting NotesIntense ruby color, lots of blackberry, wet soil, vanilla with some green pepper character. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a chewy finish.

The 2005 Sagrantino di Montefalco is representative of this quirky Umbrian variety. The wine offers up generous dark fruit, herbs and leather buttressed by the firm tannins that are the hallmark of Sagrantino in a bold, exuberant style that shows notable character. This full-bodied red is best enjoyed with hearty fare. The Sagrantino spent 18 months in 5 hectoliter French oak barrels followed by 12 months in bottle. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2015.

This estate, sparked by the inspired winemaking of Lorenzo Landi, is the most serious competitor to Arnaldo Caprai in the Montefalco Sagrantino appellation and, unlike Caprai, the 2001 Montefalco Sagrantino is notably better than the 2000. Rich and brilliant ruby in color, the wine boasts the classically powerful nose of raspberries, red currants, and plums, enriched by sweet and spicy notes of cinnamon, cloves, and incense. The dense, muscular, and concentrated palate is the trademark of this wine, warm, broad, and mouth-filling from the attack to the finish. there's only a short track record here, but I would be very surprised if the wine did not last 20 years.
