What to Expect

The classic Bordeaux blends rely on either Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon for the bulk of the wine with additions of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec helping to add complexity, color, body and structure to the finished wine.

Winemakers Notes

A blend of 55% cabernet sauvignon, 35% merlot, 5% petit verdot and 5% cabernet franc; mostly from Madrona Ranch fruit. Good full medium ruby. Big, bright aromas of raspberry, bitter chocolate, minerals and smoke, with an intriguing suggestion of peat. Tangy and bright but also quite glyceral in the middle, with strong, urgent fruit and mineral notes. Energetic, pure wine, finishing very long, with ripe, fine tannins spreading out to coat the palate. A triumph for the vintage.

Reviews

Rating: 94(+?) - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 120, May/June 2005 ($200) Saturated deep ruby. Utterly distinctive aromas of black raspberry, blackberry, Asia n spices, duck sauce, exotic herbs and flowers. Silky, lush and dense, with wonderfully subtle oak character. This actually comes across as tighter and leaner than the Tychson Hill, and more elegant, but this is due to the wine's surprising acidity and firm underlying structure, which also keep this blend remarkably fresh. A fascinating blend with a rising finish that's rare for North Coast red wine at this level of ripeness. This may merit an even higher score with six to eight years of additional bottle aging.
