Col Solare Red Bordeaux Blend Columbia Valley Shining Hill 2009

Member Review by jtryka:

The wine is a lovely deep ruby in the glass with good clarity. The nose is a nice combination of leather, oak, ripe plum, and cocoa lower that washes over a base of fresh herbs and green grass. The taste is quite nice with a blast of ripe plum, blackberries and cassis up front that transitions to some mineral notes mid palate, iron, limestone and black pepper. The finish is quite nice, well structured tannins supporting a long smooth dry finish that lingers for 30 seconds or more. They chose property on Red Mountain to build Col Solare, Italian for "shining hill." On April 12th, 2007, Col Solare celebrated its grand opening. The refined state-of-the-art winery was constructed from sustainable materials. Behind the dramatic 300 foot stone and concrete wall that emulates the basalt cliffs lining the valley, the winemaking cellar and adjoining "barri cai" enjoy the natural cooling temperature of the earth. The wine is a deep purple color with ruby along the edges and somewhat opaque. The nose is actually surprisingly fruity, with aromas of blackberry, plum and cassis overlaid with some lovely baking spice and mineral notes. The taste is quite fresh with some blueberry and blackberry up front that easily transitions to some cherry cola and mint midpalate. The finish is quite mellow, with some soft tannins supporting a long, dry finish that's smooth, not abrupt as so many big reds can be. The 2006 Col Solare is a blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, and the balance Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Syrah. The wine was aged in 75% French and 25% American oak, 100% new. Deep crimson-colored, it displays a captivating perfume of sandalwood, lavender, incense, spice box, black cherry, black currant, and a hint of chocolate. Medium-bodied, elegant, and already complex, it has layers of succulent fruit, impeccable balance, and a lengthy, pure finish. It will continue to evolve for another 4-6 years and offer a drinking window extending from 2013 to 2026. A polished red, delivering a lively mouthful of blueberry and currant fruit shaded with nice hints of cream and white pepper. The finish lingers seductively. This is distinctive¿and much smoother in texture than previous vintages. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and others. Drink now through 2014. 11,000 cases made. -HS Col Solare, the collaboration between Ste. Michelle and Antinori, brought in the first estate grapes this year, but it will be awhile before it becomes an estate wine. The current vintage uses five varieties from a half dozen vineyards scattered across four different AVAs. It's soft, fruity and open, with a firm core of black fruits wrapped into lightly smoky, polished tannins. - P.G. Bright red-ruby. Sexy aromas of redcurrant, plum, spices, graphite and tobacco. Suave and moderately intense, with slightly tart red berry flavors framed by edgy acidity. Plenty of spicy oak here. This rather laid-back wine needs some bottle aging.
