Col Solare Red Blend Red Mountain Estate Columbia Valley 2011

External Review by WineExpress.com:

More approachable, yet still beautiful, the 2011 Col Solare checks in as a blend of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 4% Malbec. It exhibits classy ripe black currants, charred meats, licorice and toasty notes to go with a full-bodied, layered and seamless feel on the palate. Lacking the back-end level of concentration found in the 2010, it is nevertheless beautifully balance and seamless, with fine tannin showing on the finish. Give it a year or two and drink it through 2026.

They chose property on Red Mountain to build Col Solare, Italian for "shining hill." On April 12th, 2007, Col Solare celebrated its grand opening. The refined state-of-the-art winery was constructed from sustainable materials. Behind the dramatic 300 foot stone and concrete wall that emulates the basalt cliffs lining the valley, the winemaking cellar and adjoining "barri cai" enjoy the natural cooling temperature of the earth. Col Solare is the partnership between two influential wine producers who are recognized leaders in their respective regions: Tuscany’s Marchesi Antinori and Washington State’s Chateau Ste. Michelle. Col Solare, Italian for “shining hill,” realizes the partners’ mission to unite two unique viticultural and winemaking cultures to produce an ultra-luxury, limited production Cabernet Sauvignon-based wine Aged 22 months in 100% new French oak the Wine Advocate scored it 92 points saying "More approachable, yet still beautiful, the 2011 Col Solare checks in as a blend of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 4% Malbec. A “Dream Team” of winemakers come together to produce what has been called Washington State’s best Cabernet-based wine. Marcus Notaro and Renzo Cotarella from Tenuta Antinori and Doug Gore of Ste, Michelle source grapes from a 30-acre estate vineyard in the Red Mountain appellation, planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Syrah. The Wine Advocate scored it 93 points saying "The 2006 Col Solare is a blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, and the balance Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Syrah. The wine was aged in 75% French and 25% American oak, 100% new. Deep crimson-colored, it displays a captivating perfume of sandalwood, lavender, incense, spice box, black cherry, black currant, and a hint of chocolate. Medium-bodied, elegant, and already complex, it has layers of succulent fruit, impeccable balance, and a lengthy, pure finish. It will continue to evolve for another 4-6 years and offer a drinking window extending from 2013 to 2026."
