Col d'Orcia Rosso di Montalcino 2000

Winemaker's Notes:

Montalcino - Siena - Sant'Angelo in Colle. Hilly lands of Eocene origin enjoying a favourable southern exposition which grants the vineyards with the blessing of the sun rays the whole day long. Weather conditions: Cold winter, spring and beginning of summer with few rainfalls. Temperatures higher in June than in July. From the beginning of August to the end of Autumn frequent rainfalls. Repeated green harvests and accurate selection of the grapes have allowed the production of high quality fruity wines. Vineyard: Banditella is a recent vineyard where clones of Sangiovese, that have been selected over the past 10 years, provide the basis for one of the most excellent expressions of Brunello di Montalcino. Average height above sea level of 300 mt. Manual harvest with rigorous selection of the bunches. Vinification: Medium-long maceration in short and wide tanks at temperatures which never rise above 28° C in order to preserve a fresh and long-living fruit. Two daily pumpings over combined with 2 "délestages" on the 3rd and the 5th days of fermentation give an efficient, but delicate extraction of colour and tannins. Ageing: Immediately after the separation from the skin, the wine is transferred into new barriques (oak from Allier, Fontainbleau and Blois) where the malolactic fermentation takes place. The wine refines in barriques for over one year MAIN FEATURES Colour: Dense ruby red, with youthful violet hints Bouquet: The great intense and typical Sangiovese fruit (blackberries and raspberries) is elegantly balanced by the noble spices deriving from the refinement in barrique. Flavour: The fullness and the elegance of the massive structure is given by a considerable quantity of noble tannins. The aftertaste is caressed by the oak that enhances the varietal fruit. Alcohol content: 13.4% vol Total acidity level: 5.5 g/l Serving temperature: 18° C

The Col D’Orcia estate is one of the oldest companies of Montalcino, being present in 1933 with the name “Fattoria di Sant’Angelo in Colle” at the First Exhibition of Italian wines held in Siena, with three vintages of Brunello. The origin of the estate dates back to the first half of the XVIII century when the noble family Delle Ciaia of Siena established an estate in the area of Sant’Angelo in Colle which increased year by year. In the second half of the nineteenth century the ownership was passed to the Servadio family and subsequently to the Franceschi family. In 1973 Count Alberto Marone Cinzano took over the company, with the aim to contribute to the development and success of Montalcino and its Brunello on world markets. From 1977 the company has been under the direction of Edoardo Virano and from 1992 the Col D’Orcia estate is presided over by Count Francesco Marone Cinzano. Read less
