Where has this little gem been hiding? Itrsquo;s a 50/50 blend of Nebbiolo and Barbera harvested from the outstanding 2000 vintage. Trust me, many wines like this were already cherry-picked from our racks a year ago! This new acquisition holds true to everything you would hope for from a 2000 Langhe. The nose is ultra-complex, displaying subtle notes of clove, cinnamon, roasted marshmallows and just a tinge of fresh anise. Saturated with flavors of ripe cherries and bright red fruits, it gracefully leads into a finish accented by mild notes of espresso, tobacco and spice box. When a friend and I tasted it recently, we both agreed that 90ndash;91 points would be an accurate score.

The estatersquo;s 2006 Montegrilli (50% Nebbiolo, 50% Barbera) is a blockbuster. It possesses awesome richness in a big, fruit-driven style. Despite the winersquo;s size, it remains vibrant and very well-delineated, qualities that are found in the top wines of 2006. The tannins build on the long finish, so the wine will clearly need another year or two in the bottle. Anticipated maturity: 2009ndash;2016.

A skillful blending of 50% Barbera and 50% Nebbiolo, the Cogno has lovely wild strawberry aromas, cranberry and a touch of licorice. Light bodied but with fairly intense flavors, it was pleasant and interesting, its only fault lay in the slightly high acidity.

The estatersquo;s 2004 Langhe Montegrilli (50% Barbera, 50% Nebbiolo) is made in a rich, weighty style. Pretty, dark fruit, licorice and tar flow from this plump, juicy effort. Anticipated maturity: 2007ndash;2011. Cogno is another one of those properties that always seems to fly below most peoplersquo;s radar screens, which is unfortunate because the wines are consistently excellent.
