The fresh herb-laced aromatics of the dark-colored 2003 Cockburn Vintage Port reveal loads of spirit-infused black fruits. Armed with a gorgeously rich and fruit-packed mid-palate, this chocolate, black cherry, as well as sweet plum drenched wine appears to slightly drop-off before roaring back to display a long finish. After 4 days of air, this wine exhibited disturbing levels of volatile acidity. Anticipated maturity: 2010–2020.
Cockburn vintages in the past have built a reputation for elegance and grip. Peter Cobb, whose family has been a part of Cockburn since the 19th century, has promoted that style tirelessly since he joined the firm in the sixties. Recently, when questioned about the glorious fruit intensity of the rsquo;94, he allowed as how Cockburn had made a conscious though not dramatic shift in their house style. Hearing the market demand for richer, more forward fruit in their Ports, Cockburn blended for a little less elegance and a little more lusciousness. The result is a wine of classical proportions. The huge volume of fresh black plum and berry fruit may be a bit blunt at the moment, but the potent tannic structure handles it with grace and grip. Remarkable balance will hold this powerful wine for decades.

Nicely made. Very subtle aromas of crushed berries, roses and lavender. Full-bodied, lightly sweet, with big juicy tannins and a long fruity finish. Best after 2010.
A big and juicy, young vintage Port. Round, with loads of very ripe roasted and raisiny character. Full-bodied and medium- sweet, with a tannic backbone. Try after 2008.
Fantastic aromas of blackberries and tar. Lightly stemmy, which is the sign of a great young Vintage Port. Full-bodied, with wonderfully integrated tannins and a lasting finish. Lots of plums and raspberries. The new 1927? Best after 2012. Tasted twice, with consistent notes.
