Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough 2011

Winemaker's Notes:

Pale straw green in color and enticingly fragrant, the 2011 Sauvignon Blanc offers lifted aromas of ripe stonefruit and juicy citrus with underlying notes of blackcurrant leaf and tomato plant spice. The palate is fine yet succulent, with zesty citrus flavors and fresh acidity. There is an appealing plushness about this wine especially as it leads into a lingering and characteristically crisp finish. Not yet reviewed; 2010 vintage rated 92 points by Wine Spectator.

Pours a clear pale straw color. Very light. THe aromas are definitely that of a SB from NZ. There are lots of citrus, peaches and passion fruit aromas. Starts off quite sweet with ample passion fruit flavors. In the middle there is plenty of lemons, tangerines and grapefruit. On the back end, there are more citrus flavors mixed with ample passion fruit. This is a quite acidic wine that has all the makings of a true SB from NZ. This is a quite refreshing light to medium bodied wine. Leaves a moderate taste on the palate. A fair value on this tasty wine.

Fine New Zealand Sauvignon, with passion fruit and a whole lot of snappy green aromas ranging from scallion and celery to green pepper and asparagus. But this isnrsquo;t one of those green meanies; it has loud tropical fruit and plenty of peach and nectarine to offer. Long on the finish and a good bet with food.

Pale color. Smoky herbs, lime peel, rye bread and jalapentilde;o pepper on the nose. Rich and expansive for New Zealand sauvignon, with citrus zest flavors complicated by a bracing peppery quality as well as a suggestion of passion fruit. Full and quite dry, with floral and mineral notes emerging. Finishes with refreshingly bitter-edged flavors of quinine, citrus pith and pepper. Offers a terrific combination of palate weight and grip.

An impressive return to form for a benchmark producer. Fine-grained and subtle, with lime juice, passion fruit, green apple and grapefruit flavors. Tart citrus, grass and stone nuances shape a deft finish. Drink now. Tasted twice, with consistent notes.

Has a vegetal note that gets in the way of the otherwise lively fruit, offering green apple and nectarine with a shot of lime before the green pepper and cucumber character makes its presence felt. This was the better of three bottles. Drink now.

Crisp and lively, with a fresh celery character weaving through the lime and green apple fruit, finishing with a bit of a rough edge. Drink now. Tasted twice, with consistent notes.

Viticulturist Ivan Sutherland and chief winemaker Kevin Judd oversee production at this celebrated winery, which was founded in 1985. Cloudy Bay owns 240 acres of vineyards in the Wairau Valley in Marlborough. The Sauvignon Blanc comes partly from its own vineyards, partly from those of other growers.

Initially reticent nose opened with aeration to show very ripe notes of citrus fruits, smoke, talc, mint and pint peppercorn. Large-scale and rich for Sauvignon (and for Cloudy Bay), with impressive texture, breadth and palate presence. Slightly dry-edged but very refreshing flavors of crisp apple and fresh herbs. In an unusually accessible style for a young Cloudy Bay Sauvignon with nothing austere about it.
