What to Expect

Sauvignon Blanc has a long history in France, and is even one of the parents of the most famous grape of all, Cabernet Sauvignon. Though having achieved high levels of acceptance and popularity in France, Sauvignon Blanc was more commonly associated with specific regions or villages, Pouilly Fume for example. With its arrival in new Zealand, and the country's ability to draw out a level of intensity from the grape, it was poised for bigger and better things. New Zealand's Sauvignon Blanc is often suggested as an alternative to Chardonnay. Its incredibly bright flavor, snappy acidity and fresh, easy feel are a perfect contrast to the rich, buttery full-bodied style of Chardonnay that is most popular. The citrus, pineapple and kiwi fruit tones most common in New Zealand's Sauvignon Blanc are paired with intensely green aromatics that recall gooseberries, freshly cut grass, and jalapenos, offering an unusual and unusually compelling blend of savory and sweet that has found a huge following.

Cloudy Bay has been the benchmark New Zealand wine, from the iconic New Zealand winemaker Kevin Judd, since its founding in 1985 as one of the first 5 wineries in Marlborough. The ultra-premium wines express the purity and intensity of fruit flavors naturally afforded by the top vineyard sites and maritime climate.

Pale straw green in colour and enticingly fragrant, the 2007 Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc is reminiscent of a fresh summer fruit salsa - ripe peach, passion fruit, mango and juicy citrus - sprinkled with fresh fennel and a dash of Pastis. The palate is rich and succulent, with a zesty citrus and apple-sherbet acidity that leads to a long, lingering, and characteristically crisp finish.

Tasting Notes - Mouth-watering aromas of passionfruit and lemongrass led with the spiciness of just-picked tomatoes tossed with fresh basil. Many small parcels of fruit, ripened under ideal conditions, bring layers of complexity to the Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc. The palate has exceptional richness, with ripe gooseberry flavours and a hint of fresh fennel leading to a powerful, crisp finish.

This firm, luscious sauvignon is impressively concentrated for the 2008 vintage. It's saturated with gooseberry and lemongrass flavors, and plenty of acidity. Give it several years in bottle to mellow, or serve it now with freshly shucked oysters.
