TASTING NOTES: Cloudline has a brilliant ruby color and medium body, which is true to Oregon Pinot Noir. On the nose and following through on the palate, I find bright red and black cherries, with a framework of cola nut and ripe dark fruit. Tannins are soft, and the finish is graceful. This is a wine to enjoy tonight, or sometime in the next 3-5 years. - Véronique Drouhin FOOD PAIRINGS: Pinot Noir is well-suited to pair with poultry, beef, fish, ham, lamb and pork. It will play well with creamy sauces, spicy seasonings and may just be one of the world's most versatile food wines.

In 2002, the Drouhin Family of Burgundy created Cloudline Cellars. Already well known for Domaine Drouhin Oregon, the Drouhins wanted to offer an elegant, authentic Oregon Pinot Noir that would be approachable young and more widely available than the DDO wines. All fruit is sourced from low-yield vineyards in the Willamette Valley, and is vinified under the eye of consulting winemaker Véronique Drouhin-Boss, Cloudline has quietly become one of Oregon’s most successful brands. Now I'll be the first to admit that I am not the biggest fan of Pinor Noir, but having lived in Portland for a few years and traveling extensively throughout the Willamette Valley, I have to admit it kinda grows on you! The 2008 Cloudline Oregon Pinot Noir is not a pure Willamette Valley wine, but is a blend of wine from a variety of Oregon vineyards. This is one of the lighter Pinot Noirs that I've had, and it tends to have more delicate flavors than some heavier wines. The wine itself has a nose that is somewhat woodsy, with mild floral aromas, that hints at the lightness. As for the taste, it's a fruit forward wine with hints of blackberry and an almost honey-like sweetness, with a finish that was somewhat lacking. This wine is light enough that I would hesitate to pair it with a full meal, instead I think it's an ideal wine for a cheese course, particularly made up soft cheeses that would not overpower the delicate nature of this wine. Overall, I would rate this wine a solid 3.5, it's certainly not a "knock your socks off" sort of wine, but for the $12-15 price tag, it certainly is a value among Oregon Pinots!

Picking began in early September under clear skies, and after a surprise burst of weather, optimal conditions returned for the last few days of picking. The result is an interesting marriage of cooler and warmer year characteristics, making 2013 a unique, balanced and exciting vintage in the Northern Willamette Valley.
