Clos Vougeot Mugneret-Gibourg 2014

Winemaker's Notes:

93-95 Points, Allen Meadows, Burghound: "A wood trimmed nose presents plenty of earth character on the softly spicy red and dark berry fruit and floral-suffused aromas. There is outstanding concentration to the overtly powerful broad-shouldered flavors that deliver first-rate depth on the impeccably well-balanced and wonderfully persistent finale. Note well however that this is going to require at least a decade of cellaring first." 01/16 92-94 Points, Neal Martin, The Wine Advocate : "The 2014 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru, matured in 80% new oak, has a more backward nose compared to the Ruchottes-Chambertin with blackberry, raspberry and incense notes that begin to open with aeration. The palate is supremely well balanced, here the oak a little more noticeable than the Ruchottes, but there is enough fruit to support it, hints of spicebox and orange zest towards the finish. This is beautifully crafted Clos de Vougeot that will be difficult to resist in its flush of youth, yet will certainly reward cellaring." 12/15 92-95 Points, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous: "(these vines were 60 years old in 2014): Bright medium red; like the Ruchottes-Chambertin, not hugely saturated or dark. Distinctly darker on the nose than the Ruchottes, offering aromas of blueberry, boysenberry and smoky oak lifted by floral and crushed-stone nuances. Densely packed but weightless, conveying a wonderfully silky, seamless texture. Intense flavors of raspberry, licorice and wild herbs are lifted by high notes of rose petal and blood orange. Finishes savory and very long, with firm but harmonious tannins and captivating lingering perfume. One of the best and most refined Clos Vougeots I tasted from this vintage." 01/16

Mugneret-Gibourg:
Mugneret is a well-known name among winemakers in the Côte de Nuits, particularly in Vosne-Romanée, where it has existed for many generations. The name Gibourg has its origins in the plains of the Saône River, among grain farmers, before the family settled in Vosne-Romanée at the beginning of the century. The surface area of Domaine Georges-Mugneret is 6 hectares, or almost 15 acres, with an average production of 32,000 bottles. Visits by appointment.
