Clos St Jean Chateauneuf Deus Ex Machina 750m France-Rhone Red 2005

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

This offers up initial blast of alcohol and creamy oak. In the mouth this starts out bitter and tight with intense, slightly smoky strawberry jam with lots of gingerbread tones and a touch of motor oil. This remains a touch hot and seemingly not open. Tight and tough with substantial tannins and that worrying touch of bitterness. Very very extracted with tobacco and coffee dominating the finish. I assume I have caught an angry bottle and will defer rating until I can try it again but based on this I greatly prefer the 2004.

Chatea St. Jean’s life started in 1920, when it was built as a summer home for Ernest and Maude Goff. It is located in Sugarloaf Ridge in the Sonoma Valley near the legendary Kenwood, California. While the 250 acres of land were originally planted with white grapes, Prohibition encouraged the planting of prunes and walnuts instead. When Chateau St. Jean was founded in 1973, the chateau was restored and opened to the public in honor of the Goff family. As the company says, “only the finest” from their wines, and they delivered on that promise in quick time. In 1999, Chateau St. Jean’s 1996 Cinq Cépages Cabernet Sauvignon won “Wine of the Year,” making the chateau the first Sonoma winery to receive this award. Chateau St. Jean was one of the pioneers in vineyard designation, stressing the importance of a grape’s origin. They didn’t just talk the talk - they took grapes from successful vineyards and made individually labeled Chardonnays, Pinot Noir, and Fumé Blanc. With the hard work and dedication of Margo Van Staaveren, the winemaker for Chateau St. Jean, the winery is able to make high quality wines with a persistent signature flavor profile across different vintages. Best in show. Dark and brooding at first glance. Soft and succulent as you get to know her. Balanced and perfect when you walk away thinking about her. The wine’s concentration and intensity is focused throughout the experience. Never wavering, cannot find a flaw in this wine.

One of the most intense wines (in balance) that I have ever tasted. It’s richness is kept in check with layers of purity, complexity and texture. This wine bleeds terroir and passionate winemaking.

Made the mistake of not letting it breathe on the first sip, after letting it air out it was much better
