Clos Rougeard les Poyeux Saumur Champigny 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

"This estate has been in the family for several generations. Basically, the Foucault brothers (Nadi and Charlie) tend exceptional vineyards, harvest at small yields, vinify in barrel, let the wines bubble for a couple of years in a glacially cold cellar and bottle without filtration. And what you get is the some of the top red wines of the Loire Valley and in the very top of France as a whole. Charles Joguet, the great winemaker of Chinon, once said: 'there are two suns. One shines outside for everybody. The second shines in the Foucaults’ cellar.'" -Importer

Clos Rougeard seems to be something of a semi-mytical entity given the paucity of information and wine that emerges from the anonymous gates in the Rue L'Eglise in Chacé just south of Saumur itself. The brothers Charlie and Nadi Foucault quietly get on with producing some of, if not, the best Cabernet Franc in the world leaving their admirers clamouring for whatever allocation they can get each year. The estate first came to my attention in an old Revue de Vin de France on the best red wines in the Loire which called the 1989 Clos Rougeard Le Bourg 'un mythe absolu'. The estate further cemented its reputation in those pages by being rated the only 'Grand Cru Exceptionenel' (Revue du Vin de France Fevrier 2006 #498). The most up to date information on the web can be found on Chris Kissack's Wine Doctor site and, at the time of writing in June 2009, Jim Budd was threatening a round up of his visit to their cellar on his blogsite (http://jimsloire.blogspot.com/search/label/Clos%20Rougeard) Read less
