Clos Rougeard le Clos Loire Rouge 2003

External Review by Morrell & Company:

Clos Rougeard has been called the Cheval Blanc of the Loire so rich, aromatic, complex and fascinating are its Cabernet Franc reds. Expensive? Not once you taste it. Here is a description from Parker's The Wine Advocate: "The Poyeux saturates the palate with black fruit, an ore-like, ineffable minerality, and smoky, carnal depth. Very clear in fruit and striking in its mineral way, this displays abundant tannin, yet a generously juicy, satisfying finish."

The brothers Charlie and Nadi Foucault quietly get on with producing some of, if not, the best Cabernet Franc in the world leaving their admirers clamouring for whatever allocation they can get each year. The estate first came to my attention in an old Revue de Vin de France on the best red wines in the Loire which called the 1989 Clos Rougeard Le Bourg 'un mythe absolu'. The estate further cemented its reputation in those pages by being rated the only 'Grand Cru Exceptionenel' (Revue du Vin de France Fevrier 2006 #498). The most up to date information on the web can be found on Chris Kissack's Wine Doctor site and, at the time of writing in June 2009, Jim Budd was threatening a round up of his visit to their cellar on his blogsite (http://jimsloire.blogspot.com/search/label/Clos%20Rougeard) Read less
