Clos Pegase Mitsuko's Vineyard Carneros Merlot 2012

Winemaker's Notes:

The availability of this product is limited and subject to change.

Wine Tasting Notes
The Mitsuko's Vineyard Merlot is a deeply-colored, exotic and complex wine, possessing aromas of creme de mure, black cherries, licorice and wild violets, enhanced by nuances of fresh pipe tobacco, cedar and slate. The wine fills the mouth with broad and dense fruit flavors, counterbalanced by a plush structure, energetic acidity, substantial mid-palate volume and a lengthy mineral-driven finish.

Very nice merlot. Carries beautiful fruit notes (cherries, red currant), leather and a hint of cedar. Good weight, with a little bit of tannins to support it. It's a V6 sedan: not too sporty or racy, but defintely has a bit more punch under the hood than the standard, more pedestrian merlots.

The color is gorgeous, deep inky-black purple with a garnet rim. The blackcurrants in the nose might trick you, at first, into thinking it is a cabernet sauvignon. Keep your nose in it, though, and the aroma changes, aschocolate covered cherries and cream come out. The palate is very plummy with blackcurrant up front, followed by raspberries and tobacco. Tannins are a little dusty but very soft. There is also plenty of acidic sharpness highlighting the fruit. The two together give this wine plenty of backbone, and six years into the vintage it still looks and tastes young and fresh.NIGHT TWOThe second night the aroma profile is the same, only softer. Blackcurrants are primary and a creaminess follows, plus some tobacco. The palate is far more black fruit than the night before, blackcurrant and plumskins, with blackberries. The tobacco influence of only 1% cabernet franc is interesting to me. Tannins are soft and fine. Acidity is not as sharp or bright as night one, but the two together give good balance to the fruit. This is good wine, well balanced and rather textbook for merlot. It has a little life left in it, but not years. Based upon this two-day tasting, I would say it is a great candidate for short decanting and drinking now or drinking over the next two years.

This wine boasts ripe, dark berry aromas and flavors while the Sangiovese provides a firm backbone and substantial body, the Merlot brings a lucious mouthfeel and lingering finish.

The dark ruby-colored 1997 Merlot is far better than the 1996. One can see Ted Lemon's hand in the fatter, richer, more textured and layered mid-palate. This plump wine reveals berry fruit intermixed with chocolate and notes of underbrush. The wine's excellent finish exhibits well-integrated wood and lower acidity that the tart 1996. The 1997 should drink well for 5-7 years.

Medium weight, with spicy black cherry, cedar and currant notes of modest depth and proportion. Finishes with mild tannins and hints of anise. Drink now through 2006.

This is the kind of Merlot that shows how well Carneros can ripen the variety. It's a big, rich wine, almost fat in gooey black cherry, mocha and anise flavors, but is fortunately balanced with rich, furry tannins. It's a bit soft, but very tasty.

Captures in style the personality of the vintage. Wines from this harvest are typically ripe, robust and very forward with lots of showy fruit flavors and soft, friendly tannins. Clos Pegase is one of the first producers of Carneros Merlot and this wine amply demonstrates the advantages of growing Merlot in a cooler climate, where shallow soils and long "hang-time" produce wines of great depth and balance.
