Clos Pegase Hommage 1996

External Review by Premium Wine & Spirits:

The top barrels from the Graveyard Hill and Palisades vineyards are chosen for Hommage. The 1998 (925 cases of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon) came primarily from Graveyard Hill Vineyard with about 0ne-third from the Palisades. A superb 1998, and certainly one of the vintage's most complete wines, it boasts an opaque ruby/purple color in addition to aromas of sweet cherry, cassis, smoke, fudge and toasty oak. Full-bodied, powerful, and formidably tannic, with excellent balance, it will drink well between 2003-2020.

Clos Pegase has turned into one of the most dependably exciting, multi-varietal wineries in Napa Valley. The very fine '01 Hommage now is followed by an equally good '02. It's ripe and juicy in black currant, cherry and chocolate, with rich, velvety tannins. A minor quibble is that the wine doesn't really need all that new oak; it almost overshadows the beautiful fruit.

Sleek and silky, elegant and complex. Flavors of cassis, currant and ripe cherries. Light spices and tannins balance this wine out beautifully. Drinking flawlessly now. A perfect match with pepper steak or pork chops.

"Hommage" reflects the continuous struggle by Clos Pegase to produce the finest red table wine by blending Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. Aged in a melange of French oak for 16 months, this wine shows a rich forward nose of cassis, plum and blackberry with just a hint of sweet toast from the barrel. On the palate the wine shows rich, elegant fruit with soft tannins and a long, complex finish.

Crisp and harmonious, gaining some flesh and silkiness as it unfolds its cherry, prune and spice flavors. Approachable now, best from 1997.

A subtle and elegant blend, integrated and gentle. Scents of cassis carry through across the palate, then the tannins begin to over- whelm the fruit in the finish. That balance should resolve with several years in the cellar, as the earthiness that is now only hinted in the tannins comes forward with the fruit. You could also resolve the tannin balance by serving the wine with roast lamb marinated in rosemary.
