What to Expect

Malbec's origins as a blending grape and the core of the sometimes rustic wines of Cahors are quickly becoming forgotten as the grape becomes solidly associated with Argentina. A heat-loving variety of grape, it has always struggled to ripen in France. While still capable of producing a full-bodied rich wine, the tannins in these were formidable. In warmer climates the tannins are able to ripen fully, yielding rich, velvety wines packed with black spice notes and dark berry fruit.

Winemakers Notes

Clos de Coutale is a rare beast; a Cahors which combines a noble and tannic
history with modern, fruity accesibility, achieved by blending the indigenous
Auxerrois grape (better known as Malbec)with the more familiar Merlot. This
wine succeeds because it maintains something of the classic Cahors rigour but
adds an attractive almost velvety texture.

Reviews

If you're sick of drinking the same old Sangiovese or Primitivo with your pizza, this Malbec with a touch of Merlot makes a great alternative. It's perfectly rustic and earthy with great, food-friendly tannins and a dose of wild Mediterranean flavor.
