Clos Fourtet 2008
Winemaker's Notes:
The harvest ran from October 9-20, and the 2008 Clos Fourtet tips the scales at13% natural alcohol. A blend of 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5%Cabernet Franc, it exhibits an inky/purple color along with notes of pen ink, blackberry liqueur, and espresso roast, sensationally concentrated layers ofpure black fruits, a full-bodied, powerful style, crisp acids, dense fruit, andripe tannins. This brilliant 2008 may merit an even higher score afteradditional time in wood. It will evolve for 20-25 years. The resurrection ofClos Fourtet over the last 7-8 years is attributable to the vision anddedication of proprietor Cuvelier, along with his manager, Tony Balu (owner ofthe tiny garagiste estate called Pierre de Lune), and the incomparableconsultant, Stephane Derenoncourt. Saint-Emilion's limes t o n e p l a t e a u produces some of the appellation' s mo s t illustrious wines, and Clos Four t e t has an enviable location there. The 20 hectares of vines are situated around a stately manor house built just before the French Revolution. This is on the very outskirts of the medieval town of Saint-Emilion. The château's underground cellars are perfect for ageing wine. Clos Fourtet owes its fame to the Rulleau and Carles families. The latter were lords of Figeac. They were the first to grow vines on this barely arable land, which nevertheless has outstanding natural drainage. Clos Fourtet's old vines, perfectly-balanced grape varieties, traditional winemaking methods backed up by the most modern techniques, and ageing in new oak barrels in underground cellars complement all the goodness that nature has bestowed

Juicy, with a tasty mix of dark plum, crushed fig and blackberry fruit, followed by licorice, black tea and maduro tobacco. The long finish lets it all hang together nicely. Drink now through 2015.

Deep purple. Fruit-driven aromas of ripe raspberry and blackberry, complicated by milk chocolate and a hint of leather. Fresh and fruity, with hints of licorice and cayenne pepper mingling with the red fruit flavors. Not especially concentrated but finishes floral and persistent. This property employs two of the keenest minds of the Right Bank as consultants, Stephane Derenoncourt and Jean-Claude Berrouet, and thus one canandrsquo;t help but expect greatness to come.
