Clos Figueres Grenache Blend Priorat 2004
Clos Figueres is the flagship wine from this venture between Christopher Cannan
of Europvin and the acclaimed Rene Barbier of Clos Mogador. A blend of old
vines Carignan and Grenache, it reveals a scented nose of ripe blackberries and
blueberries; seductive and profound at once. The palate has an extraordinary
layered texture and is brimming with berry fruit flavours, wrapped in
impressively smooth tannis. A masterpiece of Priorat wine.
Intriguing floral nose with geraniums (first time for that descriptor), eucalyptus, raspberry, rose and a little of my grandmother's attic. Medium acidity with pronounced but fine tannins and good structure. The wine reminds me of an orchestra with the nose being the flute slowly drawing you in, enticing you when WHOOSH, your hit with an army of deep resounding drums on the palate. Think of a dozen or so layers of rich dark fruit and spice with the occasional hit of mint and pink roses.

This flavorful effort should drink well through 2020. The 2005 Clos Figueres, a blend of Garnacha, Carinena, Syrah, and Mourvedre, is opaque purple-colored. It delivers a complex and expressive perfume of smoky oak, pencil lead, mineral, spice box, black cherry, blueberry, and black raspberry. This leads to a dense, opulent wine that still manages to retain some elegance. Ripe and sweet, this hedonistic effort should evolve for 3ndash;5 years and drink well through 2025.
Deep ruby. Ripe, concentrated aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant, boysenberry, tobacco, fresh rose, iron and sexy oak spices. Deep and lush, with striking sweetness and big but finely buffed tannins framing the sweet dark berry, mocha and floral pastille flavors. Gentle acids provide energy and precision, giving elegance to this powerful, tangy wine. Finishes youthfully taut.
Youthfully inky ruby. Powerfully aromatic, complex bouquet of red berries, cherry pit, anise, black pepper and clove. The deep cherry and cassis flavors are complemented by vanilla, baking spices and candied licorice. This boasts impressive energy, finishing with firm but integrated tannins and excellent sappy persistence.
