The 2007 growing season proved idea for the folks at Clos Du Val and it shows in their 2007 Carneros Pinot Noir The wines deep red color turns eggplant at the edges and the nose beckons you to sip with aromas of summer berries vanilla and clove If you can stop inhaling long enough to bring the glass to your lips youll find your mouth filled with flavors of black cherry framboise and cinnamon Luxurious and fullbodied the wine balances tannins and acidity making it a great Pinot to enjoy now and over the next few years

From France to California In 1970, American businessman John Goelet sent off French-born winemaker Bernard Portet on a mission to find new territory to grow world-class wines. In 1972, they co-founded Clos Du Val in the Stags Leap district of Napa Valley. The name means "small estate of a small valley". The estate is situated amongst 150-acres of vines beneath the famous palisades of Stags Leap, known for world-class Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. In 1973, Clos Du Val became one of the first wineries to stake a claim on the finest hillside terroir in Carneros, now recognized for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and today farms 180 acres for its estate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Clos Du Val's old-world approach to winemaking combined with extraordinary Napa Valley fruit established Clos Du Val's tradition of classic estate wines with balance, elegance, complexity and longevity. Bernard's inagural 1972 vintage was one of only six California Cabernets selected for the legendary Judgement of Paris tasting. The same vintage took first place in a rematch ten years later, proving that Clos Du Val wines stand the test of time. Today, winemaker John Clews runs day-to-day winery and vineyards operations, working closely with vineyard manager Al Wagner to farm the land gently and sustainably. Once the grapes are harvested, John and Bernard make blending decisions together to produce a renowned portfolio of wines which are truly expressive of the terroir from which they came. Read less

So glad I cellared this as it needed a year or two. Delightful fruit up front, raspberry pie (without whipped cream) and earthy notes on nose. Medium bodied, the tasting notes do not belie the fruity bouquet, instead intensify them. Add a touch of minerality - crushed turquoise - near the finish for wine which receives a passing B+ from this veteran taster.

Tasted at winery. A superbe pinot noir that has very fresh red berries and hints of spices, both, on the nose and the palate. It has quite a punch too that leads me to believe it would go better, at this stage, with food.

drink between 2012 - 202012/27/2012 - PIGLET THE BRAVE WROTE: 89 Points good drinkable cab. too tight upon opening so let it breathe for an hour. black fruit on nose and palate, lightly tannic. good with food. a nice everyday wine. Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Comment Options 11/27/2012 - LIFEBREATH WROTE: 88 Points Closed initially. Started giving up some nose and fruit at 10 minutes. A bit thin, but pleasant, with firm tannins. Decent acidity to pair with a meal. A solid 88-89 wine and decent value. I prefer Freemark Abbey for an "every day" cabernet. This vintage of Carneros Pinot Noir is presented with a lovely ruby color. Aromatic spices awaken the nose with bright raspberry, red currant, and pomegranate. Rich complex layers of fruit and spice fill the mouth with notes of mature cherries. An elegant and lingering finish makes it a perfect wine for food, but especially for enjoying by the glass. This Pinot Noir has great aging potential. - WineryAPPELLATION: Carneros, Napa ValleyCOMPOSITION: 100% Pinot NoirFERMENTATION: open top fermenters with 3 punch downs dailyAGING: 14 months in French oak barrels, 20% new barrelsACID: 5.7 g/LpH: 3.67ALCOHOL: 13.5%SOIL TYPE: clay loams on fractured bedrockAGE OF VINES: 7-13 yearsHARVESTED: August 29 - September 12, 2009BOTTLING: December 2010PRODUCTION: 5,500 cases produced

Clos du Val stubbornly hews to its traditional style, a dry, tannic and earthy Cabernet with inflections of blackberries and black currants. It's the opposite of the modern style. The alcohol level, for example, is a tender 13.5% by volume. The wine will develop for quite a few years, without becoming profound. - S.H. Dark ruby red at the core with slight fading at the rim. This has an attractive nose of fresh raspberry sweet currant and pepper followed by cigar box licorice and fresh flowers. The palate is medium to full bodied with structured tannins and great flavors of black fruit and spice. The mid palate has great lift with mouthwatering acidity that lingers into a well rounded finish. Time will be needed for this to truly open give it another 3-5 years in bottle and enjoy the following 10-15. Jeff Loo.

The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon is quite pretty in this vintage. A warm, resonant bouquet laced with espresso, plums and spices meld into expressive dark berries as this mid-weight, polished Cabernet opens up in the glass. Hints of raspberry jam, rose petals and mocha are layered into the persistent finish. Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is rarely inexpensive, but this is about as good as it gets for the money. Anticipated maturity: 2014–2024.
