From France to California In 1970, American businessman John Goelet sent off French-born winemaker Bernard Portet on a mission to find new territory to grow world-class wines. In 1972, they co-founded Clos Du Val in the Stags Leap district of Napa Valley. The name means "small estate of a small valley". The estate is situated amongst 150-acres of vines beneath the famous palisades of Stags Leap, known for world-class Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. In 1973, Clos Du Val became one of the first wineries to stake a claim on the finest hillside terroir in Carneros, now recognized for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and today farms 180 acres for its estate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Clos Du Val's old-world approach to winemaking combined with extraordinary Napa Valley fruit established Clos Du Val's tradition of classic estate wines with balance, elegance, complexity and longevity. Bernard's inagural 1972 vintage was one of only six California Cabernets selected for the legendary Judgement of Paris tasting. The same vintage took first place in a rematch ten years later, proving that Clos Du Val wines stand the test of time. Today, winemaker John Clews runs day-to-day winery and vineyards operations, working closely with vineyard manager Al Wagner to farm the land gently and sustainably. Once the grapes are harvested, John and Bernard make blending decisions together to produce a renowned portfolio of wines which are truly expressive of the terroir from which they came. Read less

Unfortunately past its prime. Would have been great 15 years ago. Brandy-like smell, with tastes of a fortified wine. A shame to have missed its window.

WINEMAKER’S COMMENTS Our Flagship Cabernet Sauvignon hails from our renowned Stags Leap District vineyard, best known for elegant and opulent wines. The wine is aged in French oak barrels for 24months to fully integrate its tannins and structure. It is deep maroon in color and opens to aromas of dark roasted coffee, black fruit and toast. The flavors are evocative of black forest fruits, dark chocolate shavings, plum and toffee. The 2010 Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits extraordinary complexity and balance, bolstered by fully integrated, silky tannins. Enjoy now or cellar for at least 10+ years. HARVEST A mild winter followed by a long, cool spring season contributed to a late bud break in 2010. The cool weather continued throughout the summer until the middle of August when we had two of the hottest days in history. Even in our Carneros Estate Vineyards, home to Clos Du Val’s coolest vineyard blocks, temperatures soared well above 100 degrees, causing sun-burn on western exposed fruit. These burnt berries were removed by hand at the winery during harvest, which began 10 days later immediately following another cool spell. Harvest was completed on October 13th, just before the heavy rains came a week later damaging much of our neighboring winery’s fruit. Clos Du Val wines are showing the intensity of flavor that we get from longer, cooler growing seasons, which should result in another stellar vintage. HISTORY Clos Du Val, French for “small vineyard estate of a small valley,” was founded in 1972 in the now legendary Stags Leap District by Franco-American entrepreneur John Goelet. After a worldwide search to purchase vineyard properties from which to craft world-class wines, 150 acres in Stags Leap and 180 acres in Carneros were chosen, solidifying Clos Du Val’s iconic stature and formidable place in Napa Valley history. Today, for Clos Du Val Senior Winemaker Kristy Melton, it is the bounty from these renowned vineyards that acts as the foundation for the distinctive, terroir-driven wines of balance and elegance for which Clos Du Val is known. - Winery COMPOSITION: 84% Cabernet Sauvignon 10% Merlot 6% Cabernet Franc AGING: 24 months in French oak barrels, 50% new ACID: 6.05 g/L pH: 3.64 ALCOHOL: 13.5%
