Clos du Val Cabernet Sauvignon Stags Leap District 2014

External Review:

WINEMAKER’S COMMENTS: The Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon is our hallmark expression of the estate vineyard surrounding our winery. It is dark, elegant and rich with aromas of black fruits, mocha and spice. The palate is met with complex notes of forest fruits, dark espresso and vanilla and the mouthfeel is balanced and creamy. The tannins are classic Stags Leap District; well-structured, velvety, and perfectly integrated, making this wine approachable now but also worthy of cellaring for decades. HARVEST: The 2012 harvest season came as a great blessing to us in Napa Valley. A calm and beautiful spring resulted in a large crop of fruit that ripened slowly and evenly through a near perfect season. Temperatures in the summer were consistent and warm, resulting in great fruit flavors in all varietals. As we approached fall, it was apparent this would be one of the largest crops we have seen in recent memory with incredible quality. We began harvest on August 31 with Sauvignon Blanc. Fruit from our Carneros vineyard followed, culminating with picks of the Cabernet Sauvignon wrapping up at the end of October. HISTORY: Clos Du Val, French for “small vineyard estate of a small valley,” was founded in 1972 in the renowned Stags Leap District. The winery was first recognized for its Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon at the famed Judgment of Paris in 1976, establishing its place as one of Napa Valley’s most iconic winery estates. Still family-owned today, Clos Du Val farms 350 acres of estate vineyards in the Stags Leap District, Carneros and Yountville appellations and continues to craft wines of balance and complexity, showcasing the fruit from the outstanding terroir on which our estate lies. COMPOSITION: 78% Cabernet Sauvignon 16% Merlot 4% Cabernet Franc 2% Petit Verdot FERMENTATION: Average 3-4 day cold soak, followed by 30-40 days with skin contact and 2-3 pumpovers daily. AGING: 24 months in French oak, 50% new ACID: 5.9 g/L pH: 3.67 ALCOHOL: 14.1%

From France to California In 1970, American businessman John Goelet sent off French-born winemaker Bernard Portet on a mission to find new territory to grow world-class wines. In 1972, they co-founded Clos Du Val in the Stags Leap district of Napa Valley. The name means "small estate of a small valley". The estate is situated amongst 150-acres of vines beneath the famous palisades of Stags Leap, known for world-class Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. In 1973, Clos Du Val became one of the first wineries to stake a claim on the finest hillside terroir in Carneros, now recognized for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and today farms 180 acres for its estate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Clos Du Val's old-world approach to winemaking combined with extraordinary Napa Valley fruit established Clos Du Val's tradition of classic estate wines with balance, elegance, complexity and longevity. Bernard's inagural 1972 vintage was one of only six California Cabernets selected for the legendary Judgement of Paris tasting. The same vintage took first place in a rematch ten years later, proving that Clos Du Val wines stand the test of time. Today, winemaker John Clews runs day-to-day winery and vineyards operations, working closely with vineyard manager Al Wagner to farm the land gently and sustainably. Once the grapes are harvested, John and Bernard make blending decisions together to produce a renowned portfolio of wines which are truly expressive of the terroir from which they came. Read less

Vintage: 2009 11/19/2013

A big, dark wine, the 2009 is one of the richest wines I have tasted from Clos Du Val recently. An exciting mélange of black fruit, incense. tobacco, licorice and pencil shavings hits the palate with notable depth and sheer power. Darker fruit, tons of melted road tar, smoke and scorched earth add weight on the deep, plush finish. The formidable Stags' Leap tannins are going to require patience. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029 - Robert Parker 92+ Points Our Flagship Cabernet Sauvignon hails from our renowned Stags Leap District vineyard, best known for elegant and opulent wines. Deep garnet in color this wine is aged in French oak for 24 months. The wine is full bodied and accented with complex flavors of black fruit, chocolate, and mocha. The 2009 Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits extraordinary complexity and balance, bolstered by fully integrated, silky tannins. Enjoy now or cellar for at least 10+ years. - Winery

Dark ruby red at the core with slight fading at the rim. This has an attractive nose of fresh raspberry sweet currant and pepper followed by cigar box licorice and fresh flowers. The palate is medium to full bodied with structured tannins and great flavors of black fruit and spice. The mid palate has great lift with mouthwatering acidity that lingers into a well rounded finish. Time will be needed for this to truly open give it another 3-5 years in bottle and enjoy the following 10-15. Jeff
