What to Expect

California's Napa Valley has been a source of world-class Cabernet Sauvignon for well over a century. Its warm climate and varied terrain allows for many styles of wine. One thread that runs through almost all the Cabernet based wines from Napa is their lush, ripe full-bodied feel and rich flavors of currant and berry. Wines from the valley floor, particularly around Rutherford, are famed for a dusty quality and those coming from the hillsides surrounding the valley, Mt. Veeder, Diamond Mountain and Howell Mountain for example, tend to be a little leaner with more obvious structural elements.

Winemakers Notes

Spring arrived in February, and the weather stayed mild throughout the summer. The crop was very light, especially for Cabernet Sauvignon, as a result of the cold spring weather from the previous year. Early bud break combined with a small crop led to the earliest start to harvest in Clos Du Val’s history, August 11. The weather was cooler in August, but a series of heat spells in September caused some dehydration in the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. The overall quality proved to be very good with exceptional Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, as well as some very powerful Cabernet Sauvignon.

Editorial Reviews

Surprisingly intense aromatics jump from the glass with classic high tones of tobacco, vanilla and eucalyptus adding complexity to the core of lightly roasted raspberry and cassis fruits. With air complicating notes of cinnamon and mace add grace notes to the soft, warm aromatics. In the mouth this is very supple and round, with a youthful feel highlighted by succulent acidity and rich, polished tannins. Full of transparent cassis and currant fruit with an intriguing note of cocoa on the palate this epitomizes the restrained elegant style of Napa Valley Cabernet. The finish is long and refreshing read more...

These wines seem to sing the same song... compressed, sterile, one-dimensional, innocuous Cabernets that lack texture, aromatics, and soul... Robert Parker. A Cabernet Sauvignon wine from California in USA. 1994 Clos du Val Cabernet Sauvignon 750ml

Dark red in color with purplish hue. Dense nose of ripe blackberries and black cherries - layered and concentrated with spicy and toasty undertones. Fleshy entry leads to a core of concentrated fruit with a framework of acid and tannins that balance out the overall mouthfeel.

Very youthful wine for how old it is, but I guess 1994 was a great vintage. Very well integrated tannins and nice fresh fruit. A bit of old wine smell on the nose. Lots of red fruit on the palate and pleasing cherry aftertaste.

Eucalyptus nose - very refined and mineral. Cassis notes, but also green peppers. A real 'bordeaux' style wine.
