Clos du Val Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

Editorial Review by Snooth Editorial:

Smoky blackberry aromas with heaps of earth, black currant, black cherry and the lightest hint of mint. Elegant and smooth mouthfeel yielding toast and blackberry flavors, paired with a hint of tar, leather and earth, finishing clean and smooth, with good structure and earth backed by cinnamon and herb.

From France to California In 1970, American businessman John Goelet sent off French-born winemaker Bernard Portet on a mission to find new territory to grow world-class wines. In 1972, they co-founded Clos Du Val in the Stags Leap district of Napa Valley. The name means "small estate of a small valley". The estate is situated amongst 150-acres of vines beneath the famous palisades of Stags Leap, known for world-class Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. In 1973, Clos Du Val became one of the first wineries to stake a claim on the finest hillside terroir in Carneros, now recognized for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and today farms 180 acres for its estate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Clos Du Val's old-world approach to winemaking combined with extraordinary Napa Valley fruit established Clos Du Val's tradition of classic estate wines with balance, elegance, complexity and longevity. Bernard's inagural 1972 vintage was one of only six California Cabernets selected for the legendary Judgement of Paris tasting. The same vintage took first place in a rematch ten years later, proving that Clos Du Val wines stand the test of time. Today, winemaker John Clews runs day-to-day winery and vineyards operations, working closely with vineyard manager Al Wagner to farm the land gently and sustainably. Once the grapes are harvested, John and Bernard make blending decisions together to produce a renowned portfolio of wines which are truly expressive of the terroir from which they came. Read less

Surprisingly intense aromatics jump from the glass with classic high tones of tobacco, vanilla and eucalyptus adding complexity to the core of lightly roasted raspberry and cassis fruits. With air complicating notes of cinnamon and mace add grace notes to the soft, warm aromatics. In the mouth this is very supple and round, with a youthful feel highlighted by succulent acidity and rich, polished tannins. Full of transparent cassis and currant fruit with an intriguing note of cocoa on the palate this epitomizes the restrained elegant style of Napa Valley Cabernet. The finish is long and refreshing ending with a finale of earthy baking spice. Both classy and classic, this is a lovely example of balanced, ripe cabernet that would be right at home being served with a fine prime rib or even Thanksgiving Turkey dinner. 92pts

The best CdV Napa Valley I've had from them. Rich and full bodied with plenty of fruit, tannins dusty earth, mocha and spice - this is powerful. Great tannin to acid balance makes cellar worthy. 92 points - drink or hold - Paul

All of the fruit came from the Hirondelle Estate Vineyard. Merlot (7%) was blended in with the Cabernet. 800 cases were produced. Raspberry and blueberry aromas lead the nose; bits of savory herbs are present as well. Copious spice notes are evident on the palate which also includes blackberry, plum and dark cherry flavors. Chicory, minerals and a dusting of sweet cocoa reverberate on the long, dusty finish. Delicious today this Cabernet will age well for the next decade or more.

So glad I cellared this as it needed a year or two. Delightful fruit up front, raspberry pie (without whipped cream) and earthy notes on nose. Medium bodied, the tasting notes do not belie the fruity bouquet, instead intensify them. Add a touch of minerality - crushed turquoise - near the finish for wine which receives a passing B+ from this veteran taster.

Tasted at winery. A superbe pinot noir that has very fresh red berries and hints of spices, both, on the nose and the palate. It has quite a punch too that leads me to believe it would go better, at this stage, with food.

Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Comment Options 11/27/2012 - LIFEBREATH WROTE: 88 Points Closed initially. Started giving up some nose and fruit at 10 minutes. A bit thin, but pleasant, with firm tannins. Decent acidity to pair with a meal. A solid 88-89 wine and decent value. I prefer Freemark Abbey for an "every day" cabernet. WINEMAKER’S COMMENTS: Brilliant red in color, this Pinot Noir has great clarity. Clove, nutmeg and bayleaf absolutely leap from the glass. This wine is just loaded with an array of spices. The complex nose leads to bold flavors of red fruits, the most notable being strawberry. Hints of toasty oak and vanilla round out the flavor palate. Full of freshness, the 2014 Pinot Noir finishes with silky, lingering tannin. HARVEST: In spite of all the interesting challenges nature handed us in 2014, it will go down in the record books as another year where amazing quality and quantity seemed like an easy task. The year started out with the drought at the top of our minds, but a very welcomed rain storm during bud break set the vines up for great success in the growing season with perfectly timed moisture. The summer had warm, even days which helped along perfectly developing berries. Harvest began in late August, only to have an earthquake rock our worlds half way through picking Sauvignon blanc. The winery was spared any damage, but our Carneros vineyard now has a rather large crack right through the middle. We carried on, like all farmers do, through an even paced harvest that has resulted in amazing color, flavor and textures in the wines that bring us great joy. FERMENTATION: Open top fermenters with three punch downs daily AGING: 11 months in French oak barrels, 20% new ACID: 5.1 g/L pH: 3.7 ALCOHOL: 14.1%

For more than four decades Clos du Val has been producing distinctive Napa Valley Cabernets from their estate vineyards in the Stag's Leap District and beyond. French Winemaker Bernard Portet secured prime vineyard property back in the early 70's which have been the basis for the legacy this winery holds today. In the outstanding 2013 vintage everything went right in the Napa Valley which was very good for Clos Du Val since they farm 350 acres of estate vineyards in Stag's Leap, Yountville and Carneros. This wine is primarily Cabernet Sauvignon, 92% with 7% Merlot and 1% Petite Sirah. The vines are mature now, 28-29 years of age, so the grape have deep flavors and good structure. The wine was aged 18 months in 25% new oak barrels. Antonio Galloni scored this a whopping 95+ saying "The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is striking. Powerful and dense in the glass, with utterly mesmerizing balance, the 2013 hits all the right spots. Graphite, smoke, grilled herbs, black cherries and incense form a tapestry of aromas and flavors that simply dazzles. The 2013 needs time in bottle for the tannins to soften, but it is a real head-turner. The combination of intense tannin and opulent fruit is classic 2013."
