Clos du Roy Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend Sauternes 1999

External Review by Premier Wine & Spirits:

Always a favorite treat, good Sauternes is usually very expensive. We found this bargain to be every bit as good as wines in the $60 range. A blend of 60% Sèmillon, 30% Sauvignon Blanc and 10% Muscadelle, this golden beauty bursts with aromas and flavors of tropical fruit, honey, linden flowers and hints of almonds and spice.

The deep, rich color is the first thing one notices about this wine. The nose greets one with elegant botrytis, a touch of alcohol, and peach/vanilla notes that bring to mind really good quality peaches-and-cream ice cream. Balance truly shows on the palate. The alcohol and the residual sugar work perfectly together to level each other. The fruit morphs on the palate to resemble a guava and grapefruit blend. The finish is very creamy with just a touch of citrus lingering. This wine is the perfect accompaniment to fresh fruit or fruit tarts and a mild blue or even cheddar cheese. This wine is great now and has a long life ahead of it.
