The 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape kicks up the intensity ever so slightly. It has a darker ruby hue and an elegant nose of black raspberries, sandy, loamy soil notes, roasted Provencal herbs, and hints of pepper and spice in a medium to full-bodied finish. A blend of 80% Grenache and the rest Syrah, Mourvedre, Cinsault, Counoise, and Vaccarese aged totally in old wood foudres, it should drink nicely for 8ndash;10 years.

Vivid red. Fresh raspberry and cherry aromas are complicated by woodsmoke, garrigue and yellow rose. Strikingly pure and sweet, with deep red and dark berry preserve flavors, silky texture and no obvious tannins. Almost Burgundian in style, with a very long, powerfully fruity finish. Herersquo;s another 2007 that will be a stunner out of the gate.

Brothers Jean-Claude, Pierre, and Bernard Sabon own this domaine. Their children mdash; David, Mylene, Celine and Thierry Sabon mdash; are gradually taking the reins, with Thierry handling the winemaking. More than 90 percent of the 62 acres of vines is allocated for their two red Chateauneufs. The regular cuvee in 2005 is 80 percent Grenache, 10 percent Syrah and 5 percent Mourvedre and Cinsault, with the remainder mixed varieties. The wine is aged 18 months mdash; first in tank, then in foudre.

The brilliant 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Tradition (made from 80% Grenache and the rest Syrah, Mourvedre, Cinsault, and other assorted authorized varieties) is brilliant. Gorgeous notes reminiscent of an open-air Provencal fruit and vegetable market jump from the glass of this deep plum/purple-colored wine. The wine is expansive, savory, very fleshy, and totally disarming in its explosive aromatics and lush, opulent flavors. The better-than-average acids, due to the cool growing year, give it uplift and vibrancy, which nicely buttress the winersquo;s full-bodied power and substance. This is a beauty to drink over the next 15 or so years.

The 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape La Cuvee du Papet has a dark plum/garnet color and a rather provocative nose of sassafras, garrigue, root vegetables, kirsch, and roasted meats. The wine has some tannin to shed, but is deep, medium to full-bodied, as wel... Robert Parkers Wine Advocate. Plush and forward, with a dusting of mocha leading the way for plum sauce, blackberry and currant fruit, all followed by coffee and spice notes on the fleshy finish. Starts slowly but puts on weight and depth in the glass, with lovely purity. Drink n... Wine Spectator. The 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape Tradition exhibits a dark ruby color (darker than 2006) and a lovely, ripe nose of sweet black cherries, raspberries, pepper, loamy soil, and spice. The wine is medium to full-bodied, relatively soft for a 2005, with light tannin in the finish. It should drink well for 10ndash;15 years.
