Clos du Mont Olivet Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2015

Member Review by Eric Guido:

The nose was restrained, even after three hours in decanter. Red berry fruit dominated with chalky minerals and a hint of herbs and funk. On the palate, it was youthful and compact with candied red fruits and violet candies. Rich fruit extract stained the palate but was replaced by a sensation of heat that lingered long after the fruit had faded. (88 points)

This is one of the worst wines I have ever tried to drink. It was not, in fact, drinkable. I have never returned a bottle of wine in my life but if I remembered where I bought it I would certainly return it. My bottle had a very bitter and stale taste; almost as if it had been sitting open for two or three weeks.

The flagship wine is composed predominately of Grenache (around 80%), with Syrah, Mouvèdre and Cinsault rounding out the blend. The wines are fermented in concrete vats and aged in large foudres. The grapes are partially de-stemmed (usually about 60%). The vines at this estate average over 60 years of age. The grapes for this bottling are sourced from various lieu-dits from the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation: Montalivet, La Crau, Les Blachières, Coste Froide, Bois Seneseau, Palestor, Bois Dauphin, Pied de Baud, Les Bousquets, Les Parrans, Les Marines, Le Bois de la Ville, Cansaud, Les Gallimardes et Les Serres. - Winery ** Only 2 in Stock **

Deep ruby. Lively aromas of fresh red berries, potpourri and Asian spices, with a hint of blood orange adding an exotic flourish. Smooth, seamless and focused on the palate, offering vibrant, mineral-tinged raspberry and bitter cherry flavors and a touch of anise. Supple tannins come on late and add shape to the long, sweet, penetrating finish.

Solid, with a charcoal spine holding layers of plum sauce, steeped currant and licorice root together, while roasted alder and sandalwood notes fill in through the finish. Has a perfumy feel overall. Drink now through 2022.
