In aroma, this wine matches or even exceeds its mate above, but wines cannot live by nose alone, and it is in the mouth that both the fruit and richness come up short. What starts as a nice bit of frontal red cherry character turns dry and curt by mid-palate, and Merlot's attractive side is lost to the blunting tannins and pushy acidity that show up in many 2006s.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Drinkable now. Further bottle aging can improve this wine.
Bright ruby red to the rim. Subdued herb and red-fruit aromas. A soft entry is followed by a moderately full-bodied, supple palate with low levels of acidity and chewy tannins. Soft, fleshy finish.
A blend of Merlot (93%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (7%) from growers in the Alexander Valley, Dry Creek and Knight's Valley appellations. The resulting wine displays a soft, ripe fruit character that is balanced nicely by the toasty vanilla oak flavors imparted from the barrels. The fruit-forward flavors of this Merlot complement a wide variety of foods.
