Clos des Papes Red Rhone Blend Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2009
This is very aromatic with a little hint of lift coming from some VA. A bit of an old school nose here with violets, olives, and a bit of teriyaki all layered over dark strawberry fruit. Smooth and polished in the mouth, showing a level of refinement that is surprising. This delivers masses of seamless slightly dark and liquory fruit supported by fine-grained tannins that extend across the long, slightly sweet finish. Very youthful. 93ptsAdd winemaker's notes

This has a very interesting set of aromatics that begin candied, but yet not fruity, more candied herbs and even a rot beer note. With time this gains a muddy, earthy component and a superb, sweet leather top note like a fine leather shop in Italy. On the palate this is amazingly well balanced and while pretty tannic there is fine supporting acidity and enough intensity of slightly chewy, strawberry fruit to keep it alltogether. The finish is long and continues the strawberry theme though turning just a touch astringent on the finale. with a push of dried herb. Better than I thought this was going to be. 2008-2016 91pts
Color, this wine has a nice medium to light color. On the nose, there are a lot of red fruits going on in here, licorice is very vibrant, a hint of vanilla, some wild flowers and aromas. The nose is light but is very complex, which I like very much. Midpalate, VERY consistent to what I get on the nose, that's all what I can say! Finish, there are a lot of red fruits dancing on my palate, nice and extremely smooth tannins, considerably lingering in the mouth, easy, lush, licorice and a hint of vanilla are vibrant in here, very well balanced, nice smooth acidity. Overall, this wine is easy drinking, very well made, has a nice smooth complexity, very versatile (it almost goes well with everything). Pair this wine with semi-firm sheep's or cow's milk cheeses, duck, checkin. I am 94+ on this effort. Happy drinking!
2007 Nov (TSMC biz week dinner) from Rick Tsai Shared with Rick, Kenneth, PN, and Brad without decanting. An powerful Chateauneuf du Pape. Dark ruby color with strong raspberry nose and spices. balanced in fruit, tannin, and acidity. good length. Still a young wine. The last sip after ~1 hour of opening was not as impressive in nose & length. too little, or too close to bottom? Have to try it again.
[Astor] Licorice, slightly cooked black fruit, spice; firm tannins on the finish. (8)
The wine seemed a bit tannic at first, but opened up after breathing for a while. It was excellent, but the rating of 97 by WS seems generous. Overpriced
Truffles on the nose along with some some barnyard / earthy tones. Very very nice. A sweet maraschino cherry finish. Nice, sweet tannins on the finish too.

The 2010 looks to be extraordinary. A slightly fresher and more elegant version of the 2007, I think it may well be the greatest Clos des Papes since the 1990 and 1978. The 2010 has a dense ruby/purple color, a beautifully precise and pure nose of de... Robert Parkers Wine Advocate. Lots of cocoa powder and coffee frame a massive block of dark plum, black currant and fig fruit, while massively endowed tannins stride from start to finish. Cassis, anise and Lapsang souchong tea notes hang in the background for now, but should emerge more with extended cellaring. The very dark, almost brooding finish is dominated by charcoal-coated grip, but the purity still wins out in the end. A very, very large wine. Best from 2017 through 2035.

Stony, pure and driven, with melon rind, white peach and verbena notes offset by fine cut and precision, as mineral, salted butter and quinine notes ripple through the very lengthy finish. Lovely now, with the fine acidity to develop nicely in the cellar. Drink now through 2018.
The 2010 Clos des Papes blanc, which as I said earlier is an equal part blend of Grenache blanc, Clairette, Roussanne, Picpoul, and Bourboulenc, is aged in stainless steel, with malolactic fermentation blocked to preserve all of its acidity. The 2010 displays honeyed grapefruit, licorice and an almost exotic pineapple note along with a hint of truffle. The wine has superb fruit, precision, minerality and freshness, and should drink nicely for 20andndash;25 or more years.
