Clos des Papes Red Rhone Blend Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2003

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2003 Clos des Papes Chateauneuf du Pape (the # 2 wine in the Wine Spectator’s annual winefest) has long been one of the most profound wines of the vintage. It somehow manages to offer the vintage’s character in power, high glycerin, and huge volume, but retains remarkable elegance and finesse that is so much in keeping with the style of Clos des Papes. The wine has a dense ruby/purple-tinged color and a wonderfully sweet nose of framboise, blackberry, and kirsch liqueur intermixed with Chinese black tea and licorice. The wine is full-bodied and voluptuous, but once past all the glycerin and beautiful, dense fruit of this full-bodied wine, there is striking purity, elegance, finesse, and surprising freshness. Still primary, it looks set to have a long life of 20-25 or more years. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2025.

This has a very interesting set of aromatics that begin candied, but yet not fruity, more candied herbs and even a rot beer note. With time this gains a muddy, earthy component and a superb, sweet leather top note like a fine leather shop in Italy. On the palate this is amazingly well balanced and while pretty tannic there is fine supporting acidity and enough intensity of slightly chewy, strawberry fruit to keep it alltogether. The finish is long and continues the strawberry theme though turning just a touch astringent on the finale. with a push of dried herb. Better than I thought this was going to be. 2008-2016 91pts

The wine seemed a bit tannic at first, but opened up after breathing for a while. It was excellent, but the rating of 97 by WS seems generous. Overpriced

Truffles on the nose along with some some barnyard / earthy tones. Very very nice. A sweet maraschino cherry finish. Nice, sweet tannins on the finish too.

The final blend for the 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape (a great success, and possibly the finest wine made here since the monumental 1990 and 1978) is 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah, and the rest Counoise and Muscardin. Its dense ruby/purple color ... Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. A Proprietary Blend wine from Rhone in France. 2003 Clos des Papes Chateauneuf du Pape 750ml
