Editorial Reviews for Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc
This has a very interesting set of aromatics that begin candied, but yet not fruity, more candied herbs and even a rot beer note. With time this gains a muddy, earthy component and a superb, sweet leather top note like a fine leather shop in Italy. On the palate this is amazingly well balanced and while pretty tannic there is fine supporting acidity and enough intensity of slightly chewy, strawberry fruit to keep it alltogether. The finish is long and continues the strawberry theme though turning just a touch astringent on the finale. with a push of dried herb. Better than I thought this was going to be. 2008-2016 91pts
Old school Chateauneuf rocking the house with brett influenced notes of barnyard and horse adding push and complexity to the textbook notes of garrigue, cherry and mint. Really effusively perfumed and delicious to smell. In the mouth this reveals the lean nature of the vintage with a surprisingly acid driven taut core of red fruits, lovely notes of wild cherry and dried herb. This is a bit short though lively and fresh and giving it's all tonight. Wonderfully approachable and traditional Chateauneuf. 90pts
The wine seemed a bit tannic at first, but opened up after breathing for a while. It was excellent, but the rating of 97 by WS seems generous. Overpriced
Truffles on the nose along with some some barnyard / earthy tones. Very very nice. A sweet maraschino cherry finish. Nice, sweet tannins on the finish too.

Tasted from multiple foudres, the 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape is stunning! Showing surprising depth and concentration in the vintage, with full-bodied richness and texture, all of the samples showed perfumed, complex aromatics, fantastic mid-palates and serious back-end structure. Less forward than the 2011, with plenty of oomph, it will most likely require short-term cellaring to come around, and have a broad drink window.
Tasted in three components, from three different foudres, followed by a hypothetical final blend that Avril has assembled in its own foudre. #1 (80% grenache, 10% syrah and the rest “all the other varieties”): Intense red fruit and floral scents, with a bright mineral overtone. Silky and fruit-driven, offering sweet raspberry liqueur and lavender flavors and a touch of white pepper. Spicy and precise, with serious finishing power. This is carrying 15.7% alcohol. #2) (70% grenache, 20% syrah and 10% mourvedre): Deeper and darker in character than #1, offering bitter cherry and blackberry aromas and flavors and a touch of licorice. A sexy floral note dominates the finish, which is smooth, focused and long. #3 (55% grenache, 40% mourvedre and 5% counoise): Exotic black and blue fruit compote on the nose, with a smoky note gaining power with air. Rich and energetic, finishing with excellent clarity and thrust. A hypothetical final blend: Opaque ruby. Heady aromas of dark berry preserves, potpourri, anise and spicecake, with a zesty mineral topnote. Juicy, focused and penetrating, offering sweet black raspberry and floral pastille flavors and a strong mineral undertone. Closes spicy and long, with smooth tannins folding smoothly into the fruit.

I tasted through various foudres of the 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape and it is unquestionably a top-flight wine for Clos des Papes that is seductive and forward by the standards of this estate. It reminded me of the precocious style of the 2003, and Avril told me the 2009 is less alcoholic than either the 2003 or 2007, and the pH is a normal 3.75. Yields were a very small 20 hectoliters per hectare, largely because of their selection process and the drought. Every foudre I tasted was beautifully pure displaying a deep ruby/plum color, sweet kirsch and black raspberry fruit, full body, decent acidity (they never acidify here) and sweet, velvety tannins. This should turn out to be a mid-90-point wine that will take a back seat to the 2007, possibly even to their monumental 2006, but will surpass what they did in 2008, 2005, 2004, 1999 and 1998. The 2009 is a beautiful success that should drink well for 15+ years.
Red wine - 2009 - Clos des Papes Chateauneuf-du-Pape - France - Region: Rh
Sinewy and reserved, with a light dusting of cocoa powder over the tangy damson plum, red licorice and cassis notes. The long, supple finish, with a lovely wafting note of Lapsang souchong tea, is packed with minerality and tight-grained tannins that will need time to fully evolve. One of the more backward 2009s, though this should pick up steam in the cellar. Best from 2013 through 2025.
The 2009 is showing better out of bottle than it was last year. Gorgeous kirsch liqueur notes, raspberry jam, forest floor, spice box, new saddle leather and a peppery spiciness are all present in this deep, voluptuously textured, open-knit Clos des Papes, which is atypically forward, luscious and approachable already. These wines often need a good 5–10 years of cellaring in the more structured vintages, but the 2009 is gorgeous from the get-go. This full-bodied, deep, concentrated wine has a deep purple color and should drink well for 20–25 years without ever really closing down. Readers may want to think of this as a slightly more concentrated version of the 2003, which is one of the great stars of that vintage.
