Clos de los Siete is a wine project conceived in 1998 by renown French winemakers Michel Rolland and Jean-Michel Arcaute. The idea was to produce a wine in the then largely untapped landscape of Tunuyan valley, south of Mendoza, Argentina. The name derives from the original seven wine industry investors who were first attached to the project. Their mission was to make wines in Argentina that rival some of the best in the world, without the use of fertilizers, pesticides and with traditional, time-tested methods. Since then, a collective of wine-making estates bearing the Clos de los Siete name have emerged and gained prominence.  Read less

This is one of the many high quality Cabs out of Argentina. This has a smooth drink-ability. A general crowd pleaser it also has a good complexity for the more sophisticated drinker.

(a blend of 57% malbec, 15% merlot, 15% cabernet sauvignon, 10% syrah and 3% petit verdot): Bright medium ruby. Sexy, nuanced aromas of blackberry, game, chocolate, herbs and smoky oak, with suggestions of liqueur-like ripeness. Suave on entry, then dense and smooth in the middle, showing good violet lift to the intense black fruit flavors. The rising finish features tannins that are firm but not hard. As usual, this bottling offers a lot of flavor for the price. The 2009 Clos de Los Siete is a nearly identical blend with the same elevage. Ripe, succulent, and impressively balanced, this outstanding value will also drink well for another 5-6 years. Rich yet cut, with complex layers of cassis, blackberry and fig paste leading to notes of tobacco and wild herb that linger on the minerally finish. Malbec, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Petit Verdot. Drink now. 50,000 cases made. -NW

Quite ripe, but focused and juicy, with blueberry, açaí berry and bramble notes laced with fruitcake and spice hints. A nice briary edge keeps the finish honest. Malbec, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Petit Verdot. Drink now. 50,000 cases made. -JM Ruby-red. Plum, dark raspberry, mocha, spicecake and tobacco on the complex and inviting nose. Supple and sweet but with lovely intensity and chocolatey ripeness to the plum and currant flavors. Plush and palate-saturating without coming across as heavy or overly sweet. Finishes with substantial tongue-dusting tannins and very good length. A very satisfying and ripe wine with good inner-mouth perfume. Heady and floral, but also kind of closed, tight and generic on the nose. The palate packs in the extract, acidity and tannins to create a tough but loud flavor set of blackberry, pepper and licorice. Pointed on the finish and less friendly than past vintages. There may be no finer red wine value in Argentina than this superb blend of 48% Malbec, 28% Merlot, 12% Syrah, and 12% Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is aged for 11 months, two-thirds in 100% new French oak and the balance in vat and bottled without fining or filtration. Opaque purple-colored, the wine coats the glass while offering up a superb bouquet of toasty oak, violets, mineral, black currant, blueberry, and black cherry. This is followed by a layered wine with gobs of ripe fruit, a plush texture, outstanding balance, and several years of aging potential (not that many buyers will be laying this down). This lengthy effort over-delivers and then some. Bright, full ruby-red. Crushed black fruits, mocha, bitter chocolate, licorice and smoked meat on the nose. Sweet, penetrating and firm-edged; aromatic in the mouth but tightly wound today. I like this wines balance of sweetness and acidity. The tannins are firm but not quite hard. This energetic wine needs time to soften.Juicy raspberry and red currant fruit is woven with slightly firm toast. Cocoa, raisin and licorice notes peek in on the grippy finish. Malbec, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Drink now through 2010. 83,000 cases made. -JM
