What to Expect

Argentina, and in particular the region around Mendoza, is making a name for itself as the source of some of the finest expressions of Malbec ever made. In this warm, yet dry climate the Malbec achieves near perfect ripeness endowing the wines with a velvety texture and intense flavors of blackberry, peppery spice, and balsamic herbs. The cooler, well-drained slopes of the hillsides of the region have proven to be ideally suited for Malbec, allowing for the wines to achieve a level of complexity and harmony that rivals those of Napa or Bordeaux.

I also really liked this. I was expecting something quite a bit different, but it's actually pretty subdued. A lot of lush cherry up front (though, not sugary which is nice). Some notes of dark chocolate, and a real surprising amount of structure. The finish is spicy and dry… maybe a little oak heavy, but not too overdone. Very nice—I'd totally buy it again. Paired it with a roasted pork with green peppercorn sauce, rough mashed fingerling potatoes, and sautéed asparagus.

We really enjoyed this wine and are looking forward to seeing where it goes over time. Big enough to lay down for future drinking, smooth enough to drink now if you don't mind some heat. Nice oak in the background. Alcohol seems a bit on the high side.

I like to pair this with food from the region - churasco, etc.

Deep purple color in the glass. This wine had oily legs that clung to the sides of the glass, no doubt due to the high alcohol. The nose shows plum, berries, oak, and some alcohol. On the palate the flavors of this wine follow the nose for the most part with quite a bit of ripe fruit. The medium-full body had some pleasant smoothness to it. The tannins in this wine were mouth-drying and substantial. The alcohol in this wine was a bit hot at times. I think this wine might be too young at this point and would probably benefit from additional bottle aging. Overall, I think that this wine was good but a little one-dimensional read more...
