Winemaker Michel Friou, who recently left Lapostolle, fashioned this blend of Carmenegrave;re, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon from the wineryrsquo;s 49-acre vineyard in the Apalta section of the Colchagua Valley. Old vines, low yields and hand-destemming of the grapes contributed to the winersquo;s combination of power and finesse. A new small winery facility dedicated to this cuveacute;e, the wineryrsquo;s flagship, is now under construction. Owner Alexandra Marnier-Lapostollersquo;s vision has helped drive the estate to the top in Chile.
The Clos Apalta luxury cuvee, primarily based on an old vine, non-irrigated Carmenere parcel, remains one of Chilersquo;s standard-bearers. The medium to full-bodied 2001 Clos Apalta explodes from the glass with powerful scents of black raspberries, cassis liqueur and hints of mocha. An elegant yet immensely ripe wine, it offers spicy black cherry flavors in its bright, high-toned and tannin-laced character. Projected maturity: 2007ndash;2012.
Full and forceful, with aromas of green herbs piercing the cassis and cherry aromas that carry the bouquet. With molasses, cassis and black-plum flavors, it seems to have all that the wine is known for; however, therersquo;s also a green, tomato-like presence that may stem from the higher level of Carmenegrave;re thatrsquo;s going into the wine.
Since 1997, when the first version was conceived as the top wine of Casa Lapostolle, Clos Apalta has created a Chilean paradigm. Winemaker Michel Friou and Pomerol guru Michel Rolland craft this red from old Apalta vines, some reaching 80 years old, some material even older than that. In years like rsquo;97 or rsquo;99, Clos Apalta described the regionrsquo;s terrior with super concentration, enormous generosity of flavors, and decadent lushness. In rsquo;01, the blend includes Carmenere, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot and itrsquo;s the best to date. Mineral and black, the winersquo;s focus reaches beyond ripeness and power toward precise balance at a high level. The texture is round, the chocolate-scented tannins firm and elegant supporting full-on blackberry and cassis flavors. An intriguing mineral character surrounds the fruit, giving complexity and depth. Long and intense, as a young wine itrsquo;s almost a painful pleasure. Built for the cellar.
Clos Apalta continues to push the envelope for Chilean icon wines. Itrsquo;s always been a blend of four or five Bordeaux grapes, and the 2005 is every bit as structured, tight and ripe as any predecessor. There is an intense blanket of new oak that tastes of mint, cinnamon, sawdust and black licorice. When that subsides (maybe in another 12 months), expect racy and complex berry flavors, pinpoint tannins and preserving acidity. Hold for another two years; then drink through 2014.
Inky violet. Vivacious raspberry and candied cherry aromas are strongly underscored by coconut and vanilla, which gain strength with air. Broad, fleshy and sweet, offering an array of red and dark berry preserve flavors, soft tannins and sneaky minerality. Finishes long and with improbable energy for such a rich, concentrated and even liqueur-like wine. Not for those who demand finesse but fans of big-time Napa cabernet should give this a shot.
Loads of ripe fruit, with plum, blackberry and boysenberry flavors pumping through, backed by suave, mocha-infused toast, mineral and spice notes. Long, fleshy finish has some serious grip. Carmenere and Merlot with Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2007 through 2012.
