Stunning purity, with concentrated plum, boysenberry and raspberry fruit that just glides across the palate, buttressed by superfine yet muscular tannins. Suave toast, coconut butter and spice notes along with alluring chocolate and black tea hints chime in on the long finish. A superb combination of fruit and elegance. Drink now through 2009.
The 2003 Clos Apalta continues an impressive run begun when the wine was first made, in 1997. Owner Alexandra Marnier-Lapostolle has recently built a separate winery to handle production, beginning with the 2005 vintage. The grapes come from 60-year-old vines grown in the Apalta vineyards. The 2003 vintage started cool but ended with plenty of warm days to fully ripen the Carmenere, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon used in this blend.
The Clos Apalta luxury cuvee, primarily based on an old vine, non-irrigated Carmenere parcel, remains one of Chile's standard-bearers. Deep ruby. Oak-spicy aromas of clove, nutmeg, cocoa powder, espresso and preserves. The intense spice character carries through in the mouth, where there’s a sweet red berry tone and lush, silky texture. This clearly has great material and is plenty sweet but it’s a shame that the wood is so dominant.
The 2005 Clos Apalta Limited Release is composed of 42% Carmenere, 28% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, and 4% Petit Verdot. Opaque purple-colored, the nose reveals notes of pain grille, mineral, spice box, and plummy black and blue fruits. This leads to a layered, nearly opulent wine with gobs of savory, spicy black fruits, excellent balance, and superb integration of oak, tannin, and acidity. It will evolve for 4ndash;6 years and be at its best from 2013 to 2025.
Loads of ripe fruit, with plum, blackberry and boysenberry flavors pumping through, backed by suave, mocha-infused toast, mineral and spice notes. Long, fleshy finish has some serious grip. Carmenere and Merlot with Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2007 through 2012.
The Clos Apalta luxury cuvee, primarily based on an old vine, non-irrigated Carmenere parcel, remains one of Chilersquo;s standard-bearers. The medium to full-bodied 2001 Clos Apalta explodes from the glass with powerful scents of black raspberries, cassis liqueur and hints of mocha. An elegant yet immensely ripe wine, it offers spicy black cherry flavors in its bright, high-toned and tannin-laced character. Projected maturity: 2007ndash;2012.
