Clonakilla Shiraz Blend Canberra District Shiraz Viognier 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

Clonakilla literally means ‘meadow of the church’ and is the name of the founder’s grandfather’s farm in County Clare, Ireland. Dr John Kirk founded Clonakilla vineyard at Murrumbateman, 40 kilometres north of Canberra in 1971. In 1997 Tim Kirk, the fourth of John’s six sons, took over responsibility for winemaking and generalmanagement. Canberra is fast becoming recognised for its cluster of twenty or so fastimproving small wineries dotted about this higher altitude region of New South Wales. This wine is an intense black-red colour. The aroma shows brooding black fruits, liquorice, spices, a touch of toast from French oak. Full, warm palate. Heaps of extract. Persistent. Has the substance to age - plenty of energy. Demonstrates again the synergy of the Hilltops district in the South Western slopes of New South Wales with the Shiraz grape.

Clonakilla was established in 1971 by John Kirk, a Canberra based research scientist. Of Irish descent, John came to Australia with his young family in 1968 to work with the CSIRO Division of Plant Industry. To his surprise despite the suitability of the environment there was no wine industry in the cool southern table lands of NSW around Canberra. To remedy this situation, in 1971 he bought a 44 acre farm near the village of Murrumbateman in New South Wales, 40 kilometres north of Canberra. The soil consisted of sandy clay loams over a friable clay subsoil and, with a climate not dissimilar to the Bordeaux region and Northern Rhone valley in France, he held high hopes for its wine producing potential. He proceeded to plant 1.2 acres each of Cabernet Sauvignon and Riesling. He named the property Clonakilla (‘meadow of the church’) after his grandfather’s farm in County Clare. A further 1.2 acres of Shiraz, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir were planted in 1972 and the vines grew well, although some were lost in a drought in 1972-73. John persevered and produced the Canberra District’s first commercial vintage in 1976: a Riesling and a Cabernet Shiraz. It wasn’t until 1978 when a bore was sunk that larger plantings became feasible. From 1978 to the present the vineyard was gradually expanded with Shiraz, Viognier, Riesling and the Cabernet family, now making up the bulk of the vineyard. At the end of 1996 John’s fourth son Tim left a career in school teaching to work full time in the family business as winemaker and general manager. In 1998 Tim and his wife Lara bought the 50 acre property next door and planted Shiraz and Viognier as well as a small olive grove on the warm north-east facing slope. Between the two properties there are now twenty two acres under vine with further plantings planned for the future. Read less

A cult wine amongst those lucky enough to live near this excellent, but still not as well-known wine region. It's a small boutique winery, so there's sometimes a scramble amongst Canberrans and public servants to get the shiraz viognier

A great example of Aussie Shiraz Viognier but with a more Rhone-like character... the viognier is hidden behind all the spices and earthy characters... a wine to enjoy slowly... ! 95/100

As expected the wine is young and buoyant, with a highly fragrant perfume of red fruit, fresh blackberry, violets, roasted meat and a little tar; the palate reveals the true potential of this superb wine with a cascading array of flavours and thrilli... Dark shiraz fruit, with blackberry, roasted meat and a gentle spice background; medium-bodied with serious intent, the tannins are ripe, the fruit juicy and the finish, long a savoury; lovely harmony. Ah yes, what a joy of a drink. This has the vibrancy and spiciness that has me reaching straight for the word exotic'. It's all cherries and plums, mint and licorice, and while you'd hardly call it intense, it's definitely high in charm. French oak ... Wine Front.
