Editorial Reviews for Cline Cellars Zinfandel California
A little blueberry toned on the nose with some cocoa and a nice, aromatic wood note accenting the black raspberry fruit. This is light and fairly bright, with acidity supporting the blueberry notes from the nose. There’s a light lashing of vanilla here along with some toasty wood spice accenting the core of light blackberry fruit. Easy and smooth with soft tannins and juicy tannins making this easy to drink, though it does drop off a touch on the finish. 86pts
User Reviews for Cline Cellars Zinfandel California
Add your reviewOne step up in price is the Cline Ancient Vines Zinfandel. A lot of producers have “old vine zinfandel” but Cline is the only one I know of that sells an “ancient vines zinfandel.” It sounds like a marketing name to me, and it is. Old vines are known to create fruit with more concentrated flavors than younger vines, and that’s the appeal of old vine zinfandel. But, it’s not a regulated classification. Old vines may be 30-40 years old or more, but there’s no official age that denotes a vine as old, much less “ancient.” UPDATE: According to Cline Cellars, the vines used for their Ancient Vines Zinfandel are 80+ years old. The fruit in this wine come primarily from Lodi (63% of the blend), with the balance coming from Mendocino, Sonoma and Lake County, California. This wine was aged for seven months in 30% new American oak, with the balance in neutral oak. There’s a lot going on in the nose of this wine. Cherry aromas, plum, coffee, vanilla and a wisp of smoke all swirl about. The palate is spicy, with blackberry and cherry flavors up front, a little bit of cocoa on the mid-palate and a spicy cherry finish. The acidity is perfect and soft tannins give the wine a nice mouth feel. This one is a little less jammy and more approachable than the other Cline zinfandel, but they’re both enjoyable wines.
My Rating 88. Nice nose of fruit and oak. Taste a little too much rest sweetness. otherwise very pleasant, smooth and full of Berries. If you would not know this is a Zinfandel, you would never guess it.

Much better are the 2011 and 2010 Ancient Vines Zinfandels. This wine spends about eight months in American oak, and both vintages look very good. They are also quite similar in style. Medium-bodied, with good acid, sweet berry fruit, some pepper, incense and spice, the 2011 seems just a tad fresher.
Soft but still zesty, with appealing notes of ripe black cherry, caramel and spice. Drink now through 2017. 62,300 cases made.
Ancient Vines Zinfandel has flavors of dark berries, coffee and chocolate with great vanilla oak character and a long lingering finish.
Soft but still zesty, with appealing notes of ripe black cherry, caramel and spice. Drink now through 2017.
Zesty and a bit rustic, with dried and baked cherry notes backed with anise and pepper. Tannins firm the finish. Drink now through 2015.
The soft, easygoing, straightforward, round 2009 Zinfandel Ancient Vine (50,000 cases produced), while not terribly complex, is satisfying in a monolithic style.

Winemaker's Notes:
"As always the California Zinfandel is a challenging and rewarding wine to produce. We continue to strive to maintain the quality and price people have come to expect from our "Cal Zin." Severe selection criteria and master blending show in the final product, which showcases a wide array of dark berry fruit including black cherry and raspberry. Additionally, spice notes and a lasting finish of vanilla from oak aging and firm, supple tannins add complexity to a wine whose average vine age is, remarkably, more than 50 years old."-Winemaker
